Dear Quantum Scientists in the Boston Area:
You are invited to Quantum Beer, Summer Edition, where Quantum Scientists
from institutions all over the Boston Area socialize away from the
blackboards. Calculations on napkins are permitted.
Every Quantum Beer is at a different place. This time, we are going to
Redbones.

Another option for summer school and conference during the summer. This one
is in Cartagena, Colombia and the list of speakers looks great. Might be of
interest to many members of the group.

Simulating Time-Dependent Quantum Dynamics On A Quantum Computer
Abstract:
Since 1982, when Feynman first proposed efficiently simulating
Hamiltonian dynamics on a quantum computer as a way around classical-
computer intractability, great advances have been achieved in
developing general-purpose quantum-simulation algorithms for bounded-
error solutions that fully account for all consumed computational
resources. The primary focus has been on time-independent Hamiltonian
evolution, but time-dependent Hamiltonian evolution is also important
as it is central to quantum control and adiabatic processes. I report
our efficient quantum algorithm for simulating time-dependent
Hamiltonian evolution of general input states on a quantum computer
provided that the Hamiltonian is sufficiently smooth. The time cost of
our algorithm is close to linear in the evolution time, hence
comparable to algorithms for simulating time-independent Hamiltonian
evolution. Our algorithm is based on queries to an oracle holding the
Hamiltonian, and we assign unit cos
t per bit or qubit for oracle calls in contrast to previous work
wherein an oracle query yields an arbitrary number of bits or qubits
at constant cost. Our per-bit or per-qubit costing of oracle calls
reveals hitherto unnoticed simulation costs even for the case of
simulating time-independent Hamiltonian evolution. We also account
for discretization errors in the time and the representation of the
Hamiltonian. Consequently our algorithm not only enables simulation
of time-dependent quantum dynamics on a quantum computer but also
reduces to the time- independent evolution case and with a fair
assessment of oracle-query cost.

Please inform interested parties that applications will be accepted
immediately for two new positions, with a deadline of April 1. See
http://careers.physicstoday.org/jobs/3956836/2-w1-juniorprofessors-in-theor…
(or the same can be found in the March print issue of Physics Today).
These positions are within the newly-founded Institute for Quantum
Information at the RWTH Aachen (IQI Aachen)
http://www.physik.rwth-aachen.de/en/institutes/institute-for-quantum-inform…
The candidates should have done an outstanding postdoc in quantum
information theory; the positions are at the "W1 Juniorprofessor" level,
equivalent to the North-American Assistant Professor. There are
tenure-tracks for both positions. The interests of the applicant can
span a wide range of topics, from the fundamental theory of quantum
entanglement, to current condensed-matter applications of quantum
information theory, to the phenomenology of experiments on solid state
qubits. Concerning the latter, various experimental groups in Aachen,
but particularly that of Hendrik Bluhm, will be interested in
collaborations with the new institute and its members. Please also note
that there is a newly-forming department of Theoretical Nanoelectronics
at the nearby Forschungszentrum Juelich,
http://www.fz-juelich.de/pgi/pgi-2/EN/Home/home_node.html
that will work closely with the IQI Aachen.
Yours, David DiVincenzo

usual).
Where: Mallinckrodt 217
What: Jacob Krich will give a talk on:
"Recombination in intermediate band photovoltaics.
Intermediate band photovoltaics (IBPV) hold the promise of radical
improvements in photovoltaic efficiency. I will discuss the design
principles of IBPV and the tradeoffs to be made with different choices of
energy gaps. Full realization of IBPV's potential requires a device with a
sufficiently low recombination rate. I will discuss the factors important
for recombination and connect the theory of multiphonon recombination to
Marcus theory. I will present updated results from the scaling studies of
localization in a topologically disordered system, which I presented last
summer, along with new results on estimating recombination rates without
intense computational effort."
