Initiative in Innovative Computing @ Harvard
Seminar Series
Wednesday, November 7, 2007; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Wendy Guan, Director of GIS Research Services, Center for Geographic
Analysis, Harvard University
and
Peter Bol, Charles H. Carswell Professor of East Asian Languages and
Civilizations; Associate of the Leverett House Senior Common Room,
Harvard University
Seminar Title: Geospatial Technology - its Values and Challenges
Abstract:
Location matters, not only in geography but also in other sciences
and humanities. Geospatial technology helps us investigate and
communicate in the spatial domain. The field enjoyed a rapid growth
in recent years. Peter Bol and Wendy Guan will talk about why spatial
thinking is critical to just about any discipline, what the
geospatial technology offers to non-geography researchers, what the
driving forces are in its recent boom, and what challenges it faces
going forward.

What's the impact of the "impact factor"?
Do you believe that more journals should adopt open-access policies?
Are you satisfied with the current scientific publishing process?
Will the internet revolutionize publishing?
If you have thoughts or questions about the future or scientific
publishing (and who doesn't?), please join us at:
"Publishing in the New Millennium: A Forum on Publishing in the
Biosciences"

Dr. Varmus will draw on his experience as Director of the NIH and as
a co-founder of the Public Library of Science to reflect on the
current and future state of scientific publishing.
PANELS:
The State of Publishing will critically assess the impact that
scientific publishing has on scientific research.
Panelists include:
• Robert Kiley, Head of e-Strategy, Wellcome Library, Wellcome
Trust
• Isaac Kohane, Director, Countway Library, Harvard University
• Emilie Marcus, Editor-in-Chief, Cell Press and Editor, Cell

Hi everyone,
The Baseball Tutorial in honor of the Red Sox making it to the World Series is
tentatively scheduled for 6:00 pm Wednesday (10/24). I think we'll be
ordering
some pizza so come with eager minds and stomachs.
Please forward this to anyone who wants to learn the rules of baseball before
the start of the big series.
Brian
P.S. Please let me know if you are planning on coming so we'll know how much
pizza to order.

Seminar Series
Wednesday, October 24, 2007; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Kwan-Liu Ma, Director, Institute for Ultrascale Visualization
Professor, Computer Science Department, University of California, Davis
Seminar Title: Visualizing Ultra-Scale Data
Abstract: Advanced computing and imaging technologies enable
scientists to study natural phenomena at unprecedented precision,
resulting in an explosive growth of data. The size of the collected
information about the Internet and mobile device users is expected to
be even greater, a daunting challenge we must address in order to
make sense and maximize utilization of all the available information.
Visualization transforms large quantities of, possibly multiple-
dimensional, data into graphical representations that exploit the
high-bandwidth channel of the human visual system, leveraging the
brain's remarkable ability to detect patterns and draw inferences. It
has thus become an indispensable tool in many areas of study
involving large data. I will introduce several effective solutions to
the large data visualization problems found in a variety of areas
from physical science, security, to software development.
