Initiative in Innovative Computing @ Harvard
Seminar Series
Wednesday, October 24, 2007; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Kwan-Liu Ma, Director, Institute for Ultrascale Visualization
Professor, Computer Science Department, University of California, Davis
Seminar Title: Visualizing Ultra-Scale Data
Abstract: Advanced computing and imaging technologies enable
scientists to study natural phenomena at unprecedented precision,
resulting in an explosive growth of data. The size of the collected
information about the Internet and mobile device users is expected to
be even greater, a daunting challenge we must address in order to
make sense and maximize utilization of all the available information.
Visualization transforms large quantities of, possibly multiple-
dimensional, data into graphical representations that exploit the
high-bandwidth channel of the human visual system, leveraging the
brain's remarkable ability to detect patterns and draw inferences. It
has thus become an indispensable tool in many areas of study
involving large data. I will introduce several effective solutions to
the large data visualization problems found in a variety of areas
from physical science, security, to software development.

Dear group,
I am going to need a subset of you to help me with the generation of a
nice visualization. In particular, benzene-thiol bound to a gold
surface. POV-RAY or the modelling package that Ivan showed me once
(pink with grey, etc.) could work. This is for a grant about
Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectrsocopy that will involve the Mazur,
Crozier (EE) and us. It is kind of urgent (by tomorrow or tuesday) so
volunteers are appreciated. You can use your favorite molecular
builder or technique :)
I copy Tom Baker that probably can help you with a good gold-surface
coordinate file or even with the figure. Tom: Thanks, I would owe you
one.

Dear group members,
Geordie Rose, the CEO of D-Wave systems, will be with us from 10-11 AM
in room M114 on Tuesday.
Quantum computing related fellows are strongly encouraged to be around
that morning 9-12 and non-QC related fellows are more than invited to
meet him.
There is case study discussed about his company later in the Business
school for those interested. (About 1 PM) I attach the PDF of the case
study.
