Abstract
Privacy issues arising from government and corporate sources are
genuinely interesting and important. But they are dwarfed by a series of
threats to privacy that do not fit the standard analytic privacy
template. They come from the sorts of Web 2.0 activity that is usually
thought of as individually empowering. The generative internet has drawn
upon three ingredients to create a new form of privacy problem: cheap
sensors, peer production, and reputation systems. These problems arise
at the technical layer in Internet and PC security, and at the content
layer in ventures such as Wikipedia, Flickr, and Facebook. Effective
solutions for these issues may have more in common with solutions to
other generative problems than those associated with the decades-old
informational privacy analytic template.

Abstract
As the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. But finding
the right words to describe a thousand pictures is very difficult.
Today, our ability to acquire image and video data far outstrips our
ability to make sense of that data. This is particularly true in the
sciences, where huge amounts of image data are acquired from scanners,
microscopes, telescopes, and various other instruments. For the past 20
years, visualization has focused on generating images from data. What is
now needed are better methods to generate abstractions that help us to
gain insights into large collections of image data.
In this talk I will make the argument that modern visualization
approaches require hierarchical data analysis to transform the data into
meaningful, perceptually intuitive representations. I will discuss a
number of data-driven hierarchical representations that tame the
complexity of high-dimensional visual data. First, I will address the
representation of spatially-varying appearance using a tree-structured
factorization method and a new matrix decomposition algorithm. Then I
will show how to generalize these ideas to decompose time-lapse video
into simple and intuitive components that can be edited. Next, I will
discuss the MERL face-scanning project, where we collected a database of
over 400 subjects with thousands of images each in order to build
high-quality statistical models of human faces. Finally, I will briefly
describe the Connectome, an ongoing project with the Harvard Center for
Brain Science, which aims to determine the detailed neural circuitry of
the brain from nanoscale-resolution images.

Seminar Title: Digital Libraries and Information Collection and
Repositories
Friday, March 16, 2007; 3:00-5:00pm, Refreshments at 2:45pm
***NOTE: Location Change*** – Now in
Maxwell Dworkin, Room G115, 33 Oxford Street
Moderator: Sidney Verba, Director of the Harvard University Library
Panelists:
Christine Borgman, Professor & Presidential Chair in Information
Studies, UCLA
Alexa McCray, Deputy Director of the Countway Library
Michael Fisher, Editor-in-Chief of Harvard University Press
Abstract
This panel will address issues in scholarly communication from three
differing, yet, interrelated perspectives. Christine Borgman will
compare scholarly practices associated with publications and with
data, discussing how incentives and disincentives to contribute and
share them differ, and how much data loss is likely to occur due to
the lack of institutional and policy initiatives. Michael Fisher will
argue that, for the first time in the thirty years he's been engaged
in the enterprise, cries of doom from scholarly book publishers may
well be justified. Alexa McCray will contend that scientific
information that is too expensive to afford or is otherwise
inaccessible does not serve the basic goals of the scientific
enterprise. Active audience participation will be encouraged.
