Initiative in Innovative Computing @ Harvard
Seminar Series
Wednesday, March 5, 2008; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Chia Shen, Visiting Senior Scientist, Initiative in Innovative
Computing at Harvard, and Senior Research Scientist, MERL Research Lab
Seminar Title:
From Clicks to Touches-Decipher the Myths and Misnomer of Multi-Touch
Abstract:
In recent years, there has been much Human Computer Interaction (HCI)
research as well as commercial hardware innovations on direct touch
interactive tabletops. As a result, a new field called Tabletop
Computing (Off the Desktop Computing) has emerged. In this talk, I
will offer glimpses into some of the ongoing research and development
endeavors around the world, including our own, that have begun to put
these interactive tabletops into the realm of social and visual
computing, as well as educational and pedagogical applications. I
will touch upon the impact, the challenges and open research
questions that have stemmed from these new efforts.

Dear group,
It is the lovely and great poster assembly time. An opportunity for
bonding, love and stress. We need to have a poster ready by FRIDAY,
March 7. The good thing is that we have last year's posters already
stored in some computer file that Ivan, Leslie, James and Alejandro
created. Now, we need to rotate to younger blood, so I need two G-1s
to put the poster together (SS+ROA). The idea is to collect Text +
Images from people around the group and integrate them into a very
cool poster. You can re-use some of the material the the G-2 used for
the last year.
Roberto and Sangwoo will e-mail instructions.
Joel and Patrick are slated as the official poster-makers for the next year.

Dear group,
Graham Fleming is visiting us this Thursday sometime between 2-4. If
anybody is interested, I will announce later the specific times, so
bring your questions.
ORPHA: Can you book the division room for that date and time ?

Seminar Series
Wednesday, February 27, 2008; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Erol Gelenbe, Professor in the Dennis Gabor Chair Imperial College,
London
Seminar Title:
Spiked Neuronal Networks and Gene Regulatory Networks: a Common
Stochastic Framework and Method of Solution
Abstract:
The Random Neural Network Model has been introduced to model that
apparently probabilistic and spiked behaviour of many natural
neuronal assemblies. We will first summarise the model and its main
mathematical and algorithmic properties. Specifically we will detail
its product form solution, and present its O(n^3) learning algorithm.
Then we will describe applications to modeling natural cortico-
thalamic oscillations, and to texture based detailed recognition for
anomaly detection in MRI images of the brain. We will concluding by
describing how very similar models can also be used to represent the
dynamics and equilibrium of gene regulatory networks. The talk will
be based on papers that we have published in the journals Neural
Computation, BioSystems, Proceedings IEEE, IEEE Trans. on Neural
Networks, and the Physical Review E.
