Initiative in Innovative Computing @ Harvard
Seminar Series
Wednesday, March 5, 2008; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Chia Shen, Visiting Senior Scientist, Initiative in Innovative
Computing at Harvard, and Senior Research Scientist, MERL Research Lab
Seminar Title:
From Clicks to Touches-Decipher the Myths and Misnomer of Multi-Touch
Abstract:
In recent years, there has been much Human Computer Interaction (HCI)
research as well as commercial hardware innovations on direct touch
interactive tabletops. As a result, a new field called Tabletop
Computing (Off the Desktop Computing) has emerged. In this talk, I
will offer glimpses into some of the ongoing research and development
endeavors around the world, including our own, that have begun to put
these interactive tabletops into the realm of social and visual
computing, as well as educational and pedagogical applications. I
will touch upon the impact, the challenges and open research
questions that have stemmed from these new efforts.
Upcoming IIC Seminars:
Continue to stay up to date with our IIC Seminar Schedule.
Parking is available in the 52 Oxford Street Garage. Please tell the
attendant that you are attending the IIC Seminar.

For those interested in SERS from Science editor's choice.
APPLIED PHYSICS: Glimpsing Tiny Live Wires Julia Fahrenkamp-Uppenbrink
The realization of molecular electronics requires reproducible methods for
creating devices in which conduction occurs through individual molecules.
Current methods rely on the fabrication of many devices to prove
statistically that a single-molecule junction has been realized, but
knowledge of the specific chemical environment of the conducting molecules
tends to be limited, complicating the interpretation of the data. Ward *et
al*. present a method for simultaneous electron transport measurements and
single-molecule sensing using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) on
nanometer-scale structures (nanogaps) bridged by individual molecules. The
metal electrodes that are used as contacts to the molecules also function as
plasmonic antennae, resulting in an enormously enhanced vibrational signal.
In about 1 in 10 junctions, changes in conductance with time correlate
closely with changes in the SERS signal, supporting a link between electron
transport and single-molecule conformational changes. The relation between
conductance and SERS spectra remains complex, but steadily improving
theoretical analyses paired with such measurements should shed light on the
fundamental mechanisms at play. -- *JFU*
*Nano Lett*. *8*, 10.1021/nl073346h (2008).

Program Description:
The Research Experience for Undergraduates Program (REU), a National
Science Foundation (NSF)-wide program, is an opportunity for
undergraduates to work closely with talented science and engineering
mentors to discover the excitement of a career in research. At
Harvard, our joint programs will fund approximately 40-45 students
this summer to perform research in materials science, nanoscale
science and engineering, bioengineering, and the nanogeosciences.
Through our REU programs, we strive to bring a diverse group of
students to the university. In addition to working closely on research
projects, students and mentors participate in common activities such
as faculty seminars, professional development workshops, and social
activities.

Tentative Summer Program Dates (these may shift depending on housing):
Monday, June 16-Friday, August 22, 2008 (note that this is different
from original dates).
Selection Process:
1. Mentor (graduate student, postdoc or faculty) submits project
title and a short description (2-3 sentences).
Note: Graduate student and postdoctoral mentors should discuss time
commitment for being a mentor with supervising faculty.
2. Mentor(s) receive(s) access to REU applicant database.
3. Mentor(s) submit top 5-8 choices, ranked, to Kathryn via email.
4. Offer is made by Kathryn to mentor's top choice via email,
including project description, and mentors are copied on this email.
5. Mentors may contact student after Kathryn sends the email to
encourage student and give more detail about project and group
dynamics.
6. Student is given 1-2 weeks to reply. If student declines offer,
we move to the next person on the list.
Please consider the following as you consider applicants and your role
as a mentor:
Our goal is to bring a diverse group of students to our REU program,
including students from institutions without extensive research
programs or PhD programs, as well as students from groups who have
been underrepresented in science and engineering. As you think of your
role as a mentor, please consider the rewards of working with a
student who can really benefit from the experience.
Note: Many of you are being contacted by students. Please do not
indicate to these students that they will receive REU funding, or that
if accepted to the REU program, they can work in your lab. Official
offers for the REU program will be made by Kathryn after mentors
follow procedure above.
Timeline:
Please look at your calendar to make sure you will be available for
these major dates.

Program Funding:
Please note the following: (1) most of our funding is from the NSF,
so international students are NOT eligible for funding through those
funds. We do have a small amount of funding that can be used for
international students. (2) NSF also asks that most of our REU
participants be non-Harvard students, and emphasizes recruitment from
diverse groups, and also from institutions without extensive research
facilities.
When considering a student, please be cognizant of our different
funding sources and the themes and restrictions for each. Our joint
programs at Harvard are a combination of funding from several sources:
· An REU/RET Site in Materials for Bioengineering Research
Internships Dedicated to Gateway Experiences (H. Stone, C. Friend)
· The Materials Science & Engineering Center at Harvard,
www.mrsec.harvard.edu (PI David Weitz)
· The Nanoscale Science & Engineering Center based at Harvard,
www.nsec.harvard.edu (PI Bob Westervelt)
· The National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (through the
Center for Nanoscale Systems), www.nnin.org and
www.cns.fas.harvard.edu (PI C. Marcus). This program has a separate
application process. All CNS fees are covered by NNIN/CNS. Students
must also attend a convocation at Cornell during the 2nd week of
August.
· A Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Team in Nanogeosciences (PI
S. Martin), www.deas.harvard.edu/nanogeosciences; and
· The Rowland Institute at Harvard, www.rowland.harvard.edu (Rowland Fellows)
