Dear group,
Tomorrow (Wednesday 22) we will take the group picture inspired by the
Solvay conference:

Please, bring clothes for it: Ties, long sleve shirts, a suit, nice
jackets, fake mustache, vest, bowtie, ANYTHING that could be used for
the picture. Bring whatevever you can find, if you don't use it,
chances are someone else might.
I'll bring my camera an tripod, and will then edit the picture to make
it look old.
I propose we aim for taking the picture at noon.

*Scholarship in the Digital Age: Information, Infrastructure, and the
Internet*
April 22, 2009; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Christine Borgman, Professor & Presidential Chair in Information Studies,
Department of Information Studies, University of California, Los Angeles
Abstract
Scholarship in the digital age is characterized by data-intensive,
information-intensive, distributed, interdisciplinary, collaborative
research. Scholars in all fields are taking advantage of new sources of data
and new means to publish and distribute their work online. Content in
digital form, whether text from digitized books or data from embedded sensor
networks, can be mined to ask new questions, in new ways. However, the
practices, products, and sources of data vary widely between disciplines.
Some fields are more advantaged than others by the array of content now
online and by the tools and services available to use it. As readers,
scientists have access to the greatest depth of their literature online, but
their use is most concentrated on recent publications. Conversely,
humanists’ reading habits cover the longest time span of publications, yet
they have the least depth of coverage online. As researchers, scientists
generate most of the data they use, while humanists draw heavily on cultural
artifacts and other sources that they neither own nor control. Social
scientists occupy the midpoint on both of these dimensions. This talk will
provide an overview of new developments in scholarly information
infrastructure, focusing on policy and practice issues in scientific data,
drawn from the author’s recent book of this title. The intersection of
digital scholarship and cyberlearning also will be addressed briefly, drawn
from the NSF Task Force Report, Fostering Learning in the Networked World.

Celebrate Earth Day with the Harvard Center for the Environment! Join us at
the final Spring 2009 lecture in series on Biodiversity, Ecology, and Global
Change:
Aaron Ellison
Senior Research Fellow in Ecology at the Harvard Forest _
"Assembling and Restoring Ecosystems in a Rapidly Changing World"
TODAY
5:00 pm
Harvard University
Sherman Fairchild Lecture Hall
7 Divinity Ave
Cambridge, MA
This Earth Day talk addresses the challenges that global change, loss of
ecological knowledge, and the inherent complexity of ecological systems
present for rehabilitating, rebuilding, and restoring ecosystems. In the 39
years since the first Earth Day, many ecological systems that provide
crucial ecosystem services for humanity are nearing or have now past their
tipping points into novel and often unexpected states. Those working to
rehabilitate or restore ecological systems often have incomplete data, fail
to account for complex, non-linear interactions or food web structure, and
do not plan for ongoing climatic change. Using examples from his own
research on forest decline in New England (e.g., past loss of chestnut
because of chestnut blight; ongoing loss of hemlock because of the hemlock
woolly adelgid) and food web assembly in the small aquatic ecosystems that
can be found inside of carnivorous pitcher plants, Aaron Ellison suggests
possible avenues for improving our understanding of ecological systems so
that restoration programs have higher likelihoods of success in our rapidly
changing world.
Aaron Ellison is the Senior Research Fellow in Ecology at the Harvard
Forest, and an Adjunct Research Professor in Biology at the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst. He received his B.A. in East Asian Philosophy from
Yale University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Evolutionary Ecology from Brown
University in 1986. After post-doctoral positions at Cornell and with the
Organization for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica, Aaron taught for year at
Swarthmore College before moving to Mount Holyoke College in 1990, where he
taught biology, environmental studies, and statistics until 2001. Following
a sabbatical year at Harvard in 2001-2002, Aaron assumed his current
position at the Harvard Forest, Harvard’s 3500-acre outdoor classroom and
laboratory for ecological research. There, he studies food web dynamics and
community ecology of wetlands and forests, evolutionary ecology of
carnivorous plants, the response of plants and ants to global climate
change, and the application of Bayesian statistical inference to ecological
research and environmental decision-making.
The Biodiversity, Ecology, and Global Change lecture series is sponsored by
the Harvard University Center for the Environment with generous support from
Bank of America. This lecture is free and open to the public. Reception to
follow!

Seminar Series Announcement
The Center for Excitonics (http://www.rle.mit.edu/excitonics) invites you
to join us at the next seminar of the
2009 series. Please forward this information on to others who might be
interested in attending this and other seminars.
Title: Indirect Excitonics
Presenter: Prof. Leonid V. Butov
Organization: Department of Physics
University of California, San Diego
Date: April 22, 2009
Time: 3:00 - 4:00pm
Place: 36-428
Refreshments: Yes
URL:
http://www.rle.mit.edu/excitonics/butov-042209.html
Abstract
Bound electron-hole pairs - excitons - are light Bose particles. They have
a relatively high temperature of quantum degeneracy of the order of a few
Kelvin. Indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells have long lifetimes and
can cool down to temperatures well below 1 Kelvin. This gives an
opportunity to study cold exciton gases. We will present studies of
pattern formation, coherence and condensation in cold exciton gases.
The indirect excitons are dipoles and their energy can be controlled by
voltage. This gives an opportunity to build devices, which operate with
excitons in place of electrons. We will present control of exciton fluxes
in excitonic circuits.
The energy control by voltage also gives an opportunity to create a
variety of potential profiles for the indirect excitons and use them as a
tool for studying the physics of excitons. We will present studies of cold
excitons in traps and lattices.
