Dear Quantum Scientists in the Boston Area:
You are invited to Quantum Beer, Summer Edition, where Quantum Scientists
from institutions all over the Boston Area socialize away from the
blackboards. Calculations on napkins are permitted.
Every Quantum Beer is at a different place. This time, we are going to
Redbones.

> We are pleased to announce the 2011 Computational Chemistry and Material Science (CCMS) Summer Institute: Materials Research for Energy at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The goal of the Summer Institute is to provide an opportunity for graduate students to explore and learn some of the cutting-edge methods in computational materials sciences, computational chemistry, and other related areas of computational science during their early years of graduate study. Each student will spend ten weeks at LLNL as the guest of an LLNL host scientist, working on a computational materials research project related to energy. In addition, renowned experts in the field from major research universities and national laboratories around the country will present a series of mini-courses for the student fellows. These courses will cover state-of-the-art and emerging computational methods in materials research for energy. There is a great deal of excitement in the computational science community for investigating various aspects of materials for energy-related problems. At the same time, there is an urgent need to train the next generation of scientists in the use of the latest computational methods and approaches for solving these challenging problems. LLNL is one of the leading national laboratories of the US Department of Energy, and is well known for its state-of-the-art computational science capabilities. Summer fellows will be selected from among an open pool of applicants who have demonstrated a strong interest in computational sciences, especially materials science, physics and chemistry. The Institute will run from June 7 to August 12, 2011. Travel funds and a generous stipend will be provided to the participants. In order to be considered, prospective participants will need to fill out an application form that can be found at the following website: http://www.llnl.gov/ccms/ The application deadline is January 31, 2011. Attached, please find a PDF version of the CCMS Summer Institute announcement. We would greatly appreciate it if you could bring this announcement to the attention of graduate students that you feel would benefit from the experience of hands-on research in computational chemistry and materials science, working with leading researchers at a national laboratory. Additional details about the summer institute can be found on the website listed above. Yosuke Kanai (kanai3(a)llnl.gov) Ming Tang (tang25(a)llnl.gov) Directors, CCMS Summer Institute

Job Summary
Applications are invited for postdoctoral and PhD positions link to a
five year project on the topic of Dynamical processes in open quantum
systems as part of an European Research Council Advanced grant (DYNamo
project). The project will be conducted between the NanoBio
Spectroscopy Group and ETSF Scientific Development Centre in Spain and
the Theory group of the Fritz-Haber-Institute in Berlin. The aim of
the research project is to develop new concepts for understanding,
identifying, and quantifying the different contributions to energy
harvesting and storage as well as describing transport mechanisms in
natural light harvesting complexes, photovoltaic materials,
fluorescent proteins and artificial (nanostructured) devices by means
of theories of open quantum systems, non-equilibrium processes and
electronic structure.
Job Description
We are looking for highly qualified candidates from Physics,
Chemistry, and Materials Science both at student and postdoctoral
level. Ph.D. students must hold a Masters Degree (diploma) requiring
the completion of a master thesis or equivalent. Post-docs must hold a
Ph.D. degree and are offered a position for 1 up to 3 years, dependent
on qualification. A strong background in theoretical condensed matter
physics, chemistry or biology is desirable. Previous experience using
quantum mechanical methods and atomistic simulations and proficiency
in scientific programming are essential.
The successful candidate will work on one (or more) of the following
general topics linked to the ERC-DYNamo project:
* Methodological development and application of the theories of open
quantum systems and quantum optimal control within
time-dependent-density functional theory (TDDFT)and many-body
formalisms.
* New functional development within DFT, TDDFT and
reduced-density-matrix theory (RDMFT).
* Control/tailor molecular response functions and selective photo-dissociation
* Excitonic energy transfer: metal-oxide hybrids and artificial photosynthesis
* Photocatalysis
* Photo-physics of fluorescent proteins
* Nanocapillarity
* Thermal transport

Dear colleague,
we are pleased to announce a 10-days Hands-on Tutorial Workshop on
Ab Initio Molecular Simulations:
Towards a First-Principles Understanding of Materials
Properties and Functions
Tuesday, July 12 - Thursday, July 21, 2011
http://www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/th/Meetings/DFT-workshop-Berlin2011/
This ten-day Hands-On Tutorial Workshop introduces the basic and
current developments in electronic structure theory for an intended
audience of researchers entering the field. Morning lectures on the
most important topics will be given by a field of local and international
experts, complemented by afternoon hands-on sessions - practical
exercises with computers - to deepen selected topics. For example, we
cover:
* Density functional theory (DFT) and quantum chemical approaches
* the most important numerical implementations
* advanced functionals (capabilities and limits!)
* electronic structure theory "beyond traditional Kohn-Sham DFT"
(including GW, TDDFT, many-body formalisms)
* ab initio molecular dynamics
* predictive multiscale approaches based on first principles
... and a wide range of other topics.
The registration and poster abstract submission interfaces for the
workshop are now open. For space reasons, the number of participants
will be limited to approx. 60. Acceptance decisions will be made within
2 weeks after the deadline (March 28, 2011).
With kind regards,
The Organizers
(Volker Blum, Heiko Appel, Matthias Scheffler)
Participants may obtain some financial support from us to
(partially) cover the local expenses.
See the web page for details:

Dear Group,
If you borrowed any of Alan's books, please let me know immediately so I can
update his borrowed book list. We had to order another copy of Nitzan,
Schatz and Tannor texts because we couldn't locate his personal copies. I
have since located 2 of the 3 books so now a return will have to be
processed.
Alan is quite generous with funding books for the group, as well as
requesting these books for library purchase and allowing others to borrow
his copies. We need to be more considerate of his belongings so this
doesn't happen in the future.
Please let me know if you have any of his books (I just need the author's
last name and title).
Thank you,
Anna

Dear Professors,
Since this note was sent yesterday, it has come to my attention that John
Liqiang Wei has confronted more Professors in CCB this month than I was
previously aware of.
I thought it important to share a picture of this individual- I found the
one below on the web.
Please call the Harvard Police Department at *5-1212 *if you see him.
Best,

Dear CCB Professors and Staff,
Unfortunately, Liqiang (or "John") Wei has entered the CCB complex twice
this month and attempted to engage with Faculty and Staff about a Faculty
position he has applied for. He is not an appropriate candidate for our
Faculty positions and has been told this and escorted from our complex on
several occasions. His inappropriate behavior and unwelcome visits trace
back over 7 years.
Should you or anyone in your research group encounter him, please call the
Harvard Police Department at *5-1212* so that they can escort him from the
premises and issue a trespass warning and/or arrest him as appropriate.
To my knowledge he has not issued any overt threats or conducted himself in
a particularly confrontational way. Regardless, we should not accept his
presence within our complex and promptly contact the HUPD if he visits
again.
Best,
Allen

This seems to be an annual reminder but please let me know should a Liqiang
Wei (he is a PhD and also calls himself John Wei), stop by your office or
that of one of our professors. If either myself, Jerry Connors, or Mike
Paterno are not available you should contact HUPD (via the Control Room

This is a person with whom we have had some issues over the past 4 years. He
has applied for faculty positions and is not an appropriate candidate. I
have informed him both personally and via email of that fact and that he is
not to come on these premises.
To our knowledge he is not dangerous but has clearly become a real pest and
does not understand that we will not consider him for a position nor do we
want him on the premises.
