Dear David,
My firsy boy was born w a c-section yesterday
Will not be able to make it!
My students will give my talk instead. It will be great as they are
all looking for postdocs among the crowd. If you see the talk
abstract, this was planned on the getgo in case my baby was born
around these days
Sorry to miss it, please take my apologies

Subject: Talk tomorrow
To: Alejandro Perdomo <aleperd(a)gmail.com>
Hi Dr Perdomo,
My title is "Electronic Structure and quantum computing."
The abstract is:
Over the last century, ingenious physical and mathematical insights paired
with rapidly advancing technology have allowed the field of quantum
chemistry to advance dramatically. However, efficient methods for the exact
simulation of quantum systems on classical computers do not exist. This
presentation will focus on elaborations of Alan and Peter's 2005 effort
[Aspuru-Guzik et al., Science {309} p. 1704, (2005)] where it was shown that
the chemical Hamiltonian can be efficiently simulated using a quantum
computer. The full algorithm will be sketched as well as the advantages and
limitations of such an approach. Relevant experimental results will be
discussed. Finally, I will mention recent developments in other methods of
quantum computational approaches to quantum simulation.

``Alexander Elgart''
Virginia Tech
Hamiltonian-based quantum computing for low-rank matrices
Thursday, May 6
3:30pm
Bromfield-Pearson Building, Room 101
Abstract: I will discuss a quantum evolution of the system where
the problem Hamiltonian is of small rank. The positive results that
we obtain in the idealized setting provide fairly tight upper and
lower bounds on the running time for such models. The negative
result shows that for a robust adiabatic computational device there
is basically no speedup in using adiabatic quantum computing for
this class of models. Our algorithms can be used to solve the
unstructured search problem with the unknown number of marked
items. This is a joint work with Zhenwei Cao.

Many have asked for one last *Quantum Beer* before the end of the semester.
This is it, please save the date*.* This is a great opportunity to socialize
away from the blackboards. Calculations on napkins are permitted.
