Highlights:
Tuesday, November 1: Join Charles Ferguson, President of the Federation of American Scientists, for a lecture on the changing landscape of nuclear power after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Sponsored by the WCFIA Program on U.S.-Japan Relations and the Harvard University Center for the Environment.
Thursday, November 3: Learn more about Fox Islands Wind, the largest community wind-power facility on the East Coast, in Maine's Penobscot Bay, through the documentary "Islands in the Wind." The 30-minute film, directed by David Conover of Compass Light Productions, will be followed by a panel discussion about community energy and offshore wind projects.
Wednesday, November 9: Much research and debate is devoted to the impact forests have on the capture or sequestration of carbon dioxide, the primary gas that causes the climate-warming “greenhouse effect.” Hear two of Harvard's most active climate researchers, atmospheric chemist Steven Wofsy and forest ecologist Andrew Richardson, tackle this question.

“The Loss of the Sphinx – Geoscience Shows the Way Out” with Dr. Andreas Laake, Geophysical Advisor, WesternGeco. The famous Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza have withstood decay for almost 5,000 years, but have come under increasing threat of destruction in recent decades. The main threats are related to water, a fact that is not quite obvious in the hyper-arid climate of the Egypt. Studies of the geology and the hydrogeology of the Giza Plateau help us understand the context of these threats and guide methods for mitigating the effects of water-related erosion.

and abstracts are to be submitted at http://absctracts.acs.org
*Graduate Student and Post Doc Image Contest*
One of the most powerful aspects of computational chemistry, biochemistry,
and structural biology is the ability to create stunning images of our work.
Our images are able to explain complex ideas and allow non-computational
scientists the ability to understand our research. To highlight this aspect
of the computational science, the COMP Division of ACS sponsors the Graduate
Student and Post Doc Image Competition. More information and previous
winners can be found here:
http://web2011.acscomp.org/awards/brochureimagecontest
_Criteria and Prize_
The COMP Programming Board will select the winning image and award the
creator complimentary registration to a future ACS National Meeting,
currently a $180 value for Graduate Students and a $360 value for Post Docs.
The image must be created and submitted by a Graduate Student or Post Doc
that is a member of the ACS and the COMP Division. Additionally, the image
must be original work and cannot have been used in a previous publication
(e.g., article image, Table of Contents image, or journal cover image).
Images are due by 5pm Eastern Time on November 21st, 2011. Please email your
image to Emilio Xavier Esposito ( emilio.esposito(a)gmail.com ). The image
must be 3 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, at least 300 dpi, and a PNG, EPS,
JPEG, or PDF. Only one image per submitter. The creator of the winning image
will be notified by email no later than Friday, December 16th, 2011.
* Organize a symposium within COMP in 2012 or 2013*
The COMP Programming Board is always looking for individuals that want to
organize symposia and provides the framework and tools necessary to organize
a great symposium. If you are interested in organizing a symposium for the
2012 national ACS meeting in Philadelphia (fall 2012) – or the 2013 national
ACS meetings – please contact Emilio Xavier Esposito (
emilio.esposito(a)gmail.com ). This is an excellent opportunity for COMP’s
members to organize symposia that are of interest to the scientific
community. We are excited to receive your ideas for symposia.

> Hybrid nano-objects formed by two or more materials with very different electronic properties (metals, semiconductors, molecules) are emerging as the most promising and versatile nano-systems. Sensing, molecular electronics, photo-catalysis, photovoltaics, nano-medicine are fields where the peculiar properties of specific hybrid nano-systems, making advantage of the different, yet coupled optical properties of the different segments, may trigger revolutionary developments.
>
> Nano-hybrids are still little exploited though. Their development presents important fundamental challenges and necessitates convergence of different cutting-edge experimental and theoretical methods. From the synthesis and experimental side, the production of hybrid nanoobjects require development of new strategies for the assembly of materials with different chemical, structural and symmetry properties. Their characterization and property measurements often requires the simultaneous use of different imaging and spectroscopy techniques, and the interpretation of the data may call for unconventional approaches mixing, for instance molecular and solid-state physics methods. From the theoretical viewpoint it is necessary to apply methods that allow the accurate description of components of different nature and their interaction. In other words, the investigation of

Hi Quanta
The group will meet on Tuesday October 25 at 11:00 in the usual spot. Byron will tell you about what he has been doing. I will be on an airplane and back at MIT on Friday.
Best,
Eddie

What: Takatoshi is up for group meeting:
Title: Fragment molecular orbital study on excited states of
Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex
I will be talking about excited state calculations of Fenna-Matthews-Olson
complex by fragment molecular orbital method.
I will discuss the applicability of the fragment molecular orbital method
for photosynthetic antenna systems.

Hi everybody,
Someone unplugged potosi (the computer next to my desk) a short while ago.
Potosi serves workunits to the World Community Grid and has to be on and
online 24/7, so please don't mess with it. Thanks for your understanding.
Best wishes
Johannes
