The EnviroAnalysis Conference has a strong focus on environmental and
analytical chemistry, providing a technical program of plenary speakers and
both oral and poster presentations. Topics range from novel sampling
methods to detection by the most sophisticated spectrometers, and will
cover applications involving the analysis of air, drinking water,
wastewater, soils, sediments, and many other sample types. The conference
will also offer short courses<http://www.enviroanalysis2013.ca/courses.html>,
an exhibition and awards program. The Chemical Institute of Canada is proud
to be partnering with EnviroAnalysis for the first time in 2013.****

Hi Group,
Just a reminder, Leo Gross from IBM-Zurich (
http://researcher.watson.ibm.com/researcher/view.php?person=zurich-lgr)
will be giving his seminar today at 4pm at Pfizer.
"Individual Molecules Investigated by Scanning Probe Microscopy with
Atomically Functionalized Tips"
See you then,
Cynthia
Hi Everyone,
We had a last minute cancellation in the normal group meeting schedule so
this week our newest group member, Kai Trepte, is going to talk with us
about his role in the group. This will be at the usual time and place,
3:00pm in the Division Room. Kai's abstract is included below.
================
One thing that I notice about Theoretical/Quantum Chemists is that they are
good, but reluctant programmers. In my short time here I have seen very
solid development work, but have heard a the refrain, "we are not
programmers" on several occasions. I am a trained programmer (you will
hear the refrain "I am not a quantum chemist") which has been invaluable
throughout my career. With your help I hope to support the group and
develop tools that will decrease the programming load many of you face. It
is my hope that we will be able to use this session to exchange information
and brainstorm about programs/applications that can be created to benefit
the group so that you don't need to be such expert programmers. I look
forward to meeting everyone on Friday.

Hi Guys:
We have a team presenting at a conference tomorrow and they are in need of
one more tube. If you have one that belongs to the group, please leave it
on Joey's desk.
Thanks,
Marlon.

Dear Friends,
On Thursday, April 11, there will be an ITAMP topical lunch discussion.
Tea Room (P-226) @ CfA (60 Garden Street)
Time: 12:00-1:30
As always pizza will be served.
Speaker: Steven Bennett
Title: Phonon-induced spin-spin interactions and spin squeezing in diamond
nanostructures
Abstract:
While single nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers exhibit long spin coherence
times, an outstanding challenge is the realization of controlled
interactions between several NV spins needed for quantum gates or
quantum-enhanced sensing. In this talk I will discuss a novel mechanism
for long-range spin-spin interactions in diamond nanostructures, mediated
by the strain-induced coupling of NV spins to the vibrational mode of a
diamond mechanical nanoresonator. The resulting phonon-mediated effective
spin-spin interactions can be used to generate spin squeezed states of an
ensemble. I will discuss our approach combining spin echo and coherent
mechanical driving to suppress spin dephasing and relaxation, and show that
significant spin squeezing should be possible in experiment.
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Misha Lemeshko*
