If anybody wants to recruit undergraduates, I need a volunteer to
coordinate the 2 posters that we can present. Each poster can have many
topics. As many as subgroups or individuals that want to recruit students.
I will nominate Jennifer as the coordinator as she and I probably will need
some organic chemistry undergraduate experts. Contact her directly.

Dear Colleague,
The Life Sciences Undergraduate Education Office invites your research
group to present a poster at the *Life Sciences Undergraduate Research Fair
(LSURF)* on *Thursday, November 12, 2015* *from 2:30-4:30 pm* in the Knafel
Center (formerly known as the Radcliffe Gymnasium) at 10 Garden Street in
Cambridge.
At the LSURF Harvard faculty and researchers present posters describing
their research to Harvard College undergraduates interested in conducting
life sciences research. The fair provides the opportunity for you to
discuss your current scientific projects with undergraduates who are
interested in joining a lab. Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate
students, and undergraduates are all welcome to present a poster and
represent their labs. At the LSURF many researchers have recruited
undergraduates to join their labs, and many students find host labs.
If you want to participate, contact Margaret A. Lynch
<margaretlynch(a)g.harvard.edu> with the number of posters (1 or 2) that your
lab wishes to present. Presenters will also have a research abstract
included in an abstract booklet given to students at the fair. Find
instructions for submitting an abstract here
<http://lifesciences.fas.harvard.edu/lsurf>.
The Life Sciences Undergraduate Education Office, Office for Undergraduate
Research and Fellowships, and the Harvard College Undergraduate Research
Association have co-sponsored this event since 2010. We thank you for the
mentoring, training, resources, and research guidance that you and your
research group provide to undergraduates. We hope that you will participate.
Best regards,
Margaret

Subject: 2016 Building Future Faculty program - NC State University
To: Garry Morgan <gdmorgan(a)ncsu.edu>

Greetings,
I hope this message finds you in good spirits. As someone who connects with
graduate students and post-doctoral students, I would like to draw your
attention to a unique opportunity to engage future faculty members in an
enriching, preparatory experience.
The 2016 Building Future Faculty (BFF) program will be offered by NC State
University on *Wednesday, March 30, 2016 - Saturday, April 2, 2016*. This
all-expenses paid workshop is designed for diverse graduate students and
post-doctoral students who are seeking a career as a faculty member.
Workshop topics include information regarding what to expect as a faculty
member, a discussion of the wealth of resources available to faculty for
teaching, and expectations of productivity for faculty engaged in research.
During the workshop, participants will spend time with current faculty and
department chairs in their discipline discussing effective strategies to
prepare for an academic career, and the realities of life as a faculty
member, as well as receiving personal tips and feedback. This program aims
to increase faculty diversity and inclusion, to create faculty that mirrors
the increasingly diversified student populations,
Past participants had the following things to say about the program:
"The BFF program provided me with a set of new ideas that I will use as a
framework for preparing and positioning myself to be a competitive faculty
candidate."
"This experience has certainly prepared me for the job market as a future
faculty member. The knowledge I have gained and the contacts that I have
acquired have been invaluable. I would recommend this program to anyone
pursuing a career in academia."
"I believe this program is not only benefiting the participants, but the
higher education community as a whole. There are experiences I have had in
this program that will remain with me throughout my career."
For the application for the 2016 Building Future Faculty program, please
visit http://oied.ncsu.edu/faculty/building-future-faculty-program/.
Applications
are due by *Monday, November 9, 2015 at 11:55 EST*.
To better understand this wonderful opportunity, view our promotional video

Hi everyone,
Just a heads up that tomorrow's group meeting is cancelled. Instead I'm
sending an extra-long email with a few things to look at.
Please take a moment to 1. bookmark / re-bookmark the group meeting
schedule (here
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LioqdopHr5ZAmn0GaCQwLUTYoU4ZJuvfrMY…>),
2. note that group meeting will be changing to Wednesdays at 11 AM starting
the week of October 19th, and 3. vote on the tutorial tricider, which I've
reopened for another week (here
<http://www.tricider.com/brainstorming/37bGg6Us487>). Next week we'll have
a tutorial on DFT from Dmitrij.
I'm currently working on the group meeting schedule through to December, so
if you have an upcoming GAC / quals / anything you'd like to practice /
talk about / whatever, please send me an email!
Finally, a reminder that Cornelius Hempel of Rainer Blatt's group is
currently visiting our group, and will be giving a talk tomorrow at 1:30 PM
in the Div Room.
All the best,
Ian
