Subject: Postdoctoral positions at Argonne
To:
Dear colleagues,
Happy New Year! Hope this email finds you well. I would greatly appreciate
if you could forward the following postdoc position announcement to those
who may be interested.
best,
Maria Chan
----------------------------------------
The Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) at Argonne National Laboratory
(near Chicago, USA) has immediate postdoctoral openings in the Theory and
Modeling group. The postdoctoral researchers will work on first principles
modeling of renewable energy materials including hybrid perovskite
photovoltaics, energy storage, and thermal management materials. Emphases
include interfacing first principles modeling with experimental
measurements, and developing algorithms and software to improve materials
property prediction.
Applicants should have expertise in some of the following:
• Density functional theory modeling of materials, especially in the
areas of energy storage, photovoltaics, and thermal transport
• Development and implementation of algorithms and software for data
analysis and materials modeling
• Computational modeling and analysis of x-ray, electron microscopy, or
other characterization data
• High-performance computing
The CNM Theory and Modeling group consists of several staff scientists and
a dozen postdoctoral researchers and graduate students working closely
together. Please see http://www.anl.gov/cnm/group/theory-modeling and
http://www.anl.gov/cnm/person/maria-k-y-chan for more information. There
will also be ample opportunities for collaborations with various
experimental and computational groups at Argonne, the University of
Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Chicago and
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Postdoctoral appointments are on a one-year basis, with a maximum term of
three years, subject to available funding and satisfactory performance
evaluation. Excellent communication and analytical skills are required.
Ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary collaborative
environment, especially involving experimental colleagues, is expected.
Software programming experience is a plus. A PhD in computational physics,
chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field is
required.
Interested candidates should direct questions or apply by emailing the
following to Dr. Maria Chan (mchan(a)anl.gov):
1. A detailed curriculum vitae including a list of publications and the
names and email addresses of three professional references.
2. In your cover letter, please kindly
a. describe your previous materials modeling experience (techniques,
materials, key contributions);
b. describe your software development experience; and
c. indicate your expected start date, citizenship, and US work
eligibility status (if known).
3. Optional: If desired, please include one representative publication
that best showcases your work.

Dear Researcher,
We would like to invite you to the upcoming *Destination Europe* event
which will take place on *5 February 2016* in Boston city center, and which
will be of interest to research faculty, post-docs and graduate students
who may be considering spending part of their career in Europe.
The event will showcase research career and funding opportunities in Europe
for researchers of any nationality, at all stages of their research
careers. It will include information and discussion opportunities on
European Union programmes as well as national programmes and initiatives in
many European countries.
Since Destination Europe was launched in 2012, some 2000 people have
attended Destination Europe conferences and have been very enthusiastic in
their feedback on the events, which are focused on the interests of the
audience.
We would appreciate if you would *forward this invitation *to your
post-doc colleagues
and doctoral students who might be interested to learn about research
opportunities in Europe. We want to be sure that any potentially interested
person is aware of the event and can register.
Participation is free but prior registration is essential.
The full Programme and Registration details are available here:

If anybody wants to host undergraduates next summer on
environmentally-related topics, send a paragraph about the project you
would like to do to Steven. He will collect them and then send to me by the
10th so I can send by the 13th.

Subject: HUCE Summer RA Program / Environmental Fellows Deadline January
13th
To:
Cc: "Simms, Eric" <esimms(a)fas.harvard.edu>
Dear HUCE Faculty Associates:
Happy New Year!
First, a quick reminder that this year’s Environmental Fellows Program
*deadline
is next Wednesday, January 13th*. We would appreciate any letters of
recommendation and/or host letters by that date. You can send them either
directly to me or to <environ(a)fas.harvard.edu
<javascript:_e(%7B%7D,'cvml','environ(a)fas.harvard.edu');>>.
Second, this is the time of year when we begin planning for our summer
research grant program for undergraduates. The Center’s Undergraduate
Summer Research Fund
<http://environment.harvard.edu/student-resources/undergraduate-summer-resea…>
offers
undergraduates funding to work individually, under faculty supervision, on
research projects (often in preparation for a thesis) *or* as research
assistants on projects with Harvard faculty.
*For the RA positions, we need to compile a list of RA opportunities for
the students to apply to*. We are thus asking you to consider providing a
short paragraph describing a potential summer research project – *relating
to an important environmental challenge* – that would benefit from student
research support while providing an interesting research experience.
These positions are generally in the range of six to ten weeks in duration.
Students will find these opportunities on our website and the website of
the Office of Career Services. They will apply with a brief essay, a
transcript, information on their summer expenses and financial aid needs,
and a brief letter of support from the sponsoring faculty member. We aim
to have decisions on the summer grants by mid-April.
We will start advertising our summer grant programs in early February,
after students have returned to campus, *so please send in your RA position
ideas as soon as possible – by the start of classes would be ideal*. Eric
Simms will be on a paternity leave later this month, so I will collect the
job descriptions this year. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions.
Best,
Jim
