Hi Guys:
As many of you know, James Kim (our Korean Ninja) will be leaving on
8/15/16. That means the paper/toner/printer responsibilities will be open.
Moving forward, let's keep it simple. If sub-groups need paper or toner,
let our office know. There is usually a stash in each sub-group anyway.
If printer issues arise, email IT. Very simple.
Fair enough?
Marlon.

*Announcement Free-Floating Max Planck Research Groups 2016 **Ausschreibung
Themenoffene Max-Planck-Forschungsgruppen 2016*
*Summary*: From September26 - October 26, 2016, a new international announce
ment for open-topic (“Free-Floating”) Max Planck Research Groups will be
made. Selected candidates will receive the possibility to run their group
at a Max Planck Institute of their own choice. The groups will be financed
from central funds. *We ask the institutes to communicate this announcement
appropriately*. If interested, candidates are also encouraged to
participate in the Tenure Track Cooperation Programme with the Technical
University of Munich (TUM).
More general information on the programme is available in the
*Organisationshandbuch* (VI 2.3) of the MPG:
https://ohb.mpg.de/Policies/MPG%20VI.203%20de%202.1/VI.2.
3_Finanzen_Finanzcontrolling_Themenoffene_Ausschreibung.pdf
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ohb.mpg.de_Policies_MP…>
*Explanations*: After deliberations in the Presidential Advisory Committee
of the MPG on July 07, 2016, the President has decided to conduct a new
public call for centrally announced Max Planck Research Groups (MPRG).
Financing will be ensured by means of central funds.
The MPG is aiming at increasing the number of female scientists in leading
positions. We would therefore like to explicitly ask you to draw the
attention of suitable young female scientists to the public call and to
encourage them to apply.
We point out that the acquisition of a new MPRG does not justify
construction measures, and that costs exceeding the fixed central funding
per group have to be covered by the institute receiving the MPRG. Start of
funding is earliest at the beginning of 2018 (with a lead time of up to
three months).
The public call will take place jointly for all three Scientific Sections.
Subsequently, the candidates will be asked to choose a Section in advance
of submitting an application. A respective announcement will be placed in
selected international job markets as well as on suitable online platforms
starting September 26, 2016.
Accompanying information for applicants including references to the joint
MPG/TUM tenure track programme will be available on the Internet at
http://www.mprg.mpg.de
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.mprg.mpg.de&d=CwMGa…>
in due course.
*Zusammenfassung:* Zwischen 26. September und 26. Oktober 2016 erfolgt eine
neue internationale, themenoffene Ausschreibung von Max-Planck-Forschungsgr
uppen.

Die Ausschreibung findet gemeinsam für alle drei Sektionen statt;
anschließend müssen sich die Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten für eine Sektion
zur Bewerbung entscheiden. Eine entsprechende Anzeige wird ab 26. September
2016 in ausgewählten internationalen Jobbörsen sowie auf geeigneten
Online-Plattformen geschaltet.
Auf der Internetseite http://www.mprg.mpg.de
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.mprg.mpg.de_&d=CwMG…>
werden zu Beginn der Ausschreibung aktuell alle wesentlichen Informationen
und die genauen Bewerbungsmodalitäten einschließlich Hinweisen zur
MPG/TUM-Kooperation zu finden sein.

Dear PIs:
Once again, we will be sponsoring the Research Communication Laboratory
with Carol Lynn at the Museum of Science for RAs. Let us know if you
would like to nominate a student for this year’s program. Ideally, they
should be a second to fourth year student. The purpose of the program
is to train them to communicate their research to a broad audience.
The program runs from Oct through June and will require a significant time
commitment. Here’s a link to read more about it: http://www.rle.mit.edu/

Dear All,
Next week, we are having Johannes Flick come into town as a visitor. He is
currently a postdoc in Angel Rubio's group at the MPSD in Hamburg and the
FHI in Berlin. His experience is in method development of TD DFT methods,
so his work should be of broad interest to our group.
He is going to be here for a few days, starting on Monday (8/8) at about 11
am and he will be giving a talk to the group on Thursday (8/11). The title
is "Light-Matter Interactions in Quantum Electrodynamical
Density-Functional Theory." Ian will send out the abstract next week. Instead
of having scheduled meetings on a single day, we are just going to have a
set of informal meetings throughout the week in the CV27 conference room.
Let me know if you interested in meeting with him and around what time you
think that you might want to stop by.
Thanks,
Danny
For all new group members and visitors.

*Title: *Refocusing schemes of two qubit gates for trapped ions** ** **
*Abstract: *Entanglement between two trapped ions is carried via a
vibrational phonon mediator. This relatively slow, second order
interaction is usually most fragile to noise effects, e.g., single body
noise terms and two body noise terms. To compensate for single body
noise effects during the two-qubit interaction, dynamical decoupling
pulses are often applied at times when the qubits are disentangled from
the phonon bus. Therefore, applying dynamical decoupling pulses with
$\omega_r$ repetition rate, to refocus a lower frequency noise, would
prolong the gate duration linearly with $\omega_r$. In the first part of
my talk I will show how to utilize dynamical decoupling pulses, such
that the phonon-mediated entangling gate is performed in the strong
coupling regime; namely, the gate duration is increased by a reduced
factor of less than $\pi/2$.
On the other hand, compensating for the amplitude noise, which inflicts
a random two qubit term, has proven more challenging. The main obstacle
is that the two body noise time scale is shorter than the two qubit gate
itself which prevents the use of standard refocusing methods. In the
second part of my talk I will present two approaches to tackle this
problem. The first one makes the use of composite pulses, applied as
dynamical decoupling on the building blocks of ultrafast entangling
gates; whereas the second approach uses a measurement and feedback based
method to refocus two qubit gates.
