Group,
I need someone from the Excitonics and Quantum sub-groups to swing by my
office tomorrow, Wednesday, to schedule meetings for Sprint Term.
Cheers,

Sorry, some of you may have noticed that I originally sent an old draft of
the advertisement. Here is the correct one.
Please forward the following advertisement (also available at <http://www.
perimeterinstitute.ca/faculty-positions-quantum-information-science>) to
anyone you think might be a strong candidate for a faculty position at
Perimeter Institute. Note the soft deadline of Jan. 15 (this coming
Sunday). The focus is on tenure track positions, but tenured positions are
also a possibility for more senior candidates. There are also positions
available in condensed matter, http://www.perimeterinstitute.
ca/faculty-positions-condensed-matter-theory.
Daniel Gottesman
Perimeter Institute invites applications for two tenure track faculty
positions (equivalent to the level of assistant professor) in quantum
information science. Exceptional candidates may also be considered for
tenured senior faculty positions. We welcome applications from outstanding
individuals working on aspects of quantum information related to
fundamental theoretical physics. The successful applicants will play a
leading role in integrating Perimeter's quantum information activities with
the other research areas at the Institute, such as condensed matter theory,
quantum foundations, quantum fields, holography and tensor networks. These
positions are also part of an initiative to establish a Centre for Quantum
Matter (CQM) at the Institute. As part of the CQM initiative, Perimeter is
also searching to fill three tenure track faculty positions in Condensed
Matter Theory
<http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/faculty-positions-condensed-matter-theory>
.
Perimeter Institute is a leading global centre for fundamental research in
theoretical physics. The Institute offers an exceptional research
environment and is currently staffed with 20 faculty and 16 associate
faculty members, as well as 55 postdoctoral fellows, 53 distinguished
visiting research chairs and 27 visiting fellows. It is home to world class
research efforts in condensed matter physics, cosmology, mathematical
physics, quantum fields and strings, quantum foundations, quantum gravity,
quantum information and particle physics. More information about Perimeter
Institute is available here <http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/> and in
particular, the quantum information researchers can be found here
<http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/research/research-areas/quantum-information>
.
The successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics or a
closely related field, postdoctoral experience, and will have demonstrated
exceptional strength in independent research. Interested candidates should
submit their application online
<http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/applications/466>, including their
curriculum vitae, list of publications and research statement. They must
also arrange to have at least three letters of recommendations submitted as
well, following the instructions provided there.
Consideration of applications will begin on *January 15, 2017*. However,
applications will be accepted until all positions are filled.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply, however Canadian citizens
and permanent residents will be given priority. Perimeter Institute is
committed to employment equity and diversity in the workplace and welcomes
applications from all qualified individuals including women, visible
minorities, aboriginal people, persons with disabilities, and persons of
any sexual orientation or gender identity. Applicants who require special
accommodation in order to complete their application/interview are
encouraged to contact peopleandculture(a)perimeterinstitute.ca for assistance.
Hey Everyone,
Happy New Year!
Since it's intersession and everyone is hopefully less busy, we're going to
try to have another board game night. Please fill in this form
<https://goo.gl/forms/YhR52fnfIXTBSZ4P2> if you are interested.
The options are any night next week and a few days the week after.
Cheers,
Jennifer

Subject: Update about Adaptation-themed writing opportunity
To: alan(a)aspuru.com
Dear Alán,
I'm writing from *Creative Nonfiction *magazine with an update on the call
for submissions relating to the topic of "Adaptation" that we are hosting.
We reached out previously in the hopes you would be able to help us spread
the word to writers or potential writers, and I wanted to note that we've
extended the deadline by a month, to February 6th.
The details and link to full information are below; we continue to hope
that you might share information on this opportunity with any associates or
people who would have a relevant story to tell.
*Adaptation
<https://creativenonfiction-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/Redirect?ukey=1qFfbnB…>*
*$3,500 first-place prize*
*February 6th, 2017 submission deadline*
*All pieces considered for Summer 2017 Creative Nonfiction magazine issue*
Whether a scientific perspective that illuminates ideas about sustainable
human adaptation and climate change, or more personal accounts of major
life transitions, stories of adaptation are a huge part of our current
global consciousness. We're looking for original essays illuminating the
ways in which the need to keep up with a rapidly-changing world drives the
work of scientists, designers, thinkers, innovators, farmers, soldiers,
medical professionals, teachers, and others and affects the lives of
prisoners, patients, refugees, students, travelers, and other citizens.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.
All best,
Matt Spindler

>> Dear members:
>>
>>
>>
>> I would like to invite everyone to the 2017 All-Hands Meeting on
>> Wednesday January 25 at the MIT Endicott House in Dedham. Please use
>> this gathering as an opportunity to meet and talk with your colleagues.
>> Somewhere in the room there may well be a collaborator for your next big
>> result. We’ll be using the same guidelines as last year for the talks:
>>
>>
>>
>> Each student or postdoc that is funded by the center is expected to give
>> a 5 minute presentation. It is important that these brief talks be
>> comprehensible to our broad audience and to potential funders, so we are
>> asking presenters to craft their talks with care. We’re also asking all
>> attendees to participate in scoring and providing helpful comments on
>> each presentation. This can be useful guidance for more effective
>> communication, an increasingly important career skill.
>>
>>
>>
>> “Research Communication Challenge” scoring will focus on three criteria:
>>
>> 1. Clarity of motivation & significance: Why are you doing the
>> work? What do you hope to achieve?
>>
>> 2. Speaking style & delivery: Tell us an engaging story without too
>> much jargon. Can we hear you?
>>
>> 3. Effectiveness of slides and graphics: Can we read and understand
>> everything that you project? Does each slide support the message, or is
>> there too much information competing with the narrative for us to process
>> in such a short amount of time?
>>
>>
>>
>> *Highest scorers in each category will win certificates and $100 cash
>> prizes. In addition, the highest scorer overall will receive $100.*
>>
>>
>>
>> Attached is the slide presentation template with guidelines; however,
>> you may modify it or design slides more suitable for your particular talk.
>> You may use as many slides as you think you need, but please follow the 5
>> minute time limit exactly. Presenters who exceed the 5 minute limit by
>> more than 30 seconds will be penalized in the scoring. However, there may
>> be some time for Q&A following each presentation.
