Hi all,
Alfredo Alexander-Katz is here with us from MIT during his sabbatical.
Tomorrow he'll talk at group meeting - the title of his talk is "Towards
Holographic Self-Assembly".
See you there, and best,
Ian

*Title: *New regimes of superradiance in a symmetrically pumped BEC
*Abstract: *Superradiance is the collective scattering of light from a
group of particles. Bose Einstein condensates are particularly well-suited
to study superradiance in the form of collective Rayleigh scattering due to
their long coherence times. We have realized new regimes of superradiance
when a BEC is pumped by two noninterfering counterpropagating beams. For
small Rayleigh scattering rates, there is suppression of superradiance,
while for large Rayleigh scattering rates a new phase, similar to a
supersolid, is energetically favored. I will discuss our experimental
observations together with the theoretical prediction of a supersolid in
this system.
*Location: *B-106 @ Center for Astrophysics (60 Garden Street)
*Directions: *After entering the lobby of the CfA, turn right to enter the
hallway of the B building. In the hallway, turn right again, B-106 will be
at the end of the hallway on the left side.
Dear quanta,
For those of you interested in computer science, here are two possibly
relevant courses being offered this term:
1) 18.408: An Algorithmist's Toolkit. Taught by Jon Kelner. TR2.30-4 (4-237)
Topics to include "spectral graph theory, convex geometry, iterative
methods for optimization and linear algebra, graphs, linear systems, and
electrical networks, graph decomposition, approximation, and embedding, and
lattices and basis reduction."
2) 6.875/18.425: Cryptography & Cryptanalysis. Taught by Shafi Goldwasser.
MW9.30-11 (4-370)
"A rigorous introduction to modern cryptography. Emphasis on the
fundamental cryptographic primitives of public-key encryption, digital
signatures, pseudo-random number generation, and basic protocols and their
computational complexity requirements. "

1) Apr 21-22:
Chris King and I are organizing a special session on “Mathematical
Perspectives in Quantum Information Theory” at the upcoming AMS Sectional
Meeting at Northeastern University. More information will be available at
this URL later:
http://www.ams.org/meetings/sectional/2252_program_ss24.html#title
There is a registration fee, which is $10 for students, and the
registration deadline is Apr 17.
2) Apr 23-24: Arthur Jaffe, Zhengwei Liu and Shing-Tung Yau are organizing
a meeting on q info at Harvard. Again there is a placeholder link which
has no information yet but hopefully will later.
http://cmsa.fas.harvard.edu/conference-on-quantum-information/
My understanding is that this will be free to attend (apart from the
conference dinner) but they may ask for registration
3) June 14-16: ComSciCon 2018 National Workshop
Free workshop for grad students on science communication. They have a
working website with lots more information
https://comscicon.com/comscicon18-workshop
and their registration deadline is Mar 1.

Hi everyone,
Tobias Kramer will give a Seminar this Friday at 2pm in the division room.
Please find below Tobias' title and abstract.
Cheers Christoph
Title: Bringing HEOM up-to-speed on a supercomputer
Abstract:
I present our current work to provide a scalable open quantum system
dynamics using HEOM for supercomputers with hundreds of nodes. At the
Zuse-Institute Berlin (ZIB) we implement the Hierarchical Equations of
Motion (HEOM) method and provide utilities to compute various optical
response functions. As illustration I compare computed 2D spectra with
experiments of the photosynthetic apparatus of C. Tepidum [1] for various
polarization sequences.

Good afternoon everyone,
With the upcoming move of the group to the University of Toronto, we will
need to know plans for all of our group members. Please reach out to me
directly (by Monday, 02/05) and let me know if your plan is to stay or join
the group in Toronto. If your plan is to move with the group, please let me
know what date you are planning on leaving.
If there are questions, please let me know.
Best,
Felix
