world economic growth will be one of the great challenges of
this century. The Harvard University Center for the Environment
invites the Harvard community to take up the challenge by
participating in this ongoing series of discussions.

First elected to Congress in 1976, Edward J. Markey has constructed
an extraordinary legislative recordhelping to shape more than 20
years of telecommunications policy while championing consumer rights,
health reform, the elimination of large monopolies, the conservation
of environmental resources, the reduction of nuclear threats and the
strengthening of our homeland security. He continues to be one of the
most articulate and informed voices in Congress concerning both energy
and environmental policy.
Rep. Edward Markey was appointed by Speaker Pelosi as Chairman of the
new Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming at the
beginning of the 110th Congress. Rep. Markey has long been active on
energy and environmental issues, reflecting his commitment to
maintaining the quality of life and economic opportunity in New
England. The president of the League of Conservation Voters has
said of the chairman "there is no greater environmental champion in
Congress than Ed Markey as we fight to head off the looming catastrophe
of climate change."
