Hi Everyone,
When: 3:30-4:30
Where: Cabot Division Room
What: Michael Stopa is giving a second group meeting.
A few minutes I sent out an email announcing Jacob Krich's group
meeting which will take place tomorrow at the usual time. IN ADDITION
to this, Michael Stopa will be giving another, official, Aspuru-Guzik
group meeting at 3:30 - 4:30pm. We are looking into getting some minor
refreshments for people between the two group meetings. Michael's
abstract is posted below.
============================
A collection of molecules treated as two-level systems can be thought
of as a set of spins. The product state of those spins can be
transformed to a basis of states of good total "angular momentum" J,
and good J_z (z-component). When this system of spins interacts with
long wavelength radiation (such that the coupling is independent of
the spin) selection rules on the transitions become apparent in this
latter basis and the phenomenon of "Dicke superradiance" occurs.
In this talk I will present work on a calculation to construct an
invertible transformation between the direct product basis and the
total J basis. For an arbitrary product state I calculate the rate of
transition via radiation out of the state in first order perturbation
theory. I will present statistics of these transition rates as a
function of the J_z quantum number of the initial state.
