IIC Colloquium: Multimillion-Atom Simulations of Materials Under
Extreme Conditions
Location: 60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Date: Wednesday, November 5, 2008
Time: 4:00 p.m.
Speaker:
Priya Vashishta (Director, Collaboratory for Advanced Computing and
Simulations (CACS), University of Southern California; Professor,
Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Chemical Engineering & Materials
Science, and Computer Science)
Abstract:
Advanced materials and devices with nanoscale grains and features are
being developed to achieve higher strength and toughness in ceramic
materials and greater speeds in electronic devices. How can the
behavior of these systems be modeled? Below 100 nanometers, continuum
descriptions of materials and devices must be supplemented by
atomistic descriptions. Current state-of-the-art atomistic simulations
involve 10 million to 1 billion atoms. This talk will discuss the
molecular-dynamics simulations used to study critical issues in the
area of structural and dynamical correlations, as well as reactive
processes in nanostructured materials under extreme conditions.
