“*Advances in organic and inorganic polymer and materials chemistry coupled
with new approaches to construction and characterization of nanostructured
materials has led to a revolution in the design of organic and hybrid solar
photovoltaic cells. This revolution was initiated more than 20 years ago,
with breakthrough discoveries in organic and hybrid cell formats. Work in
this field has taken on a new significance given the current emphasis on the
development of renewable energy sources which is driven by increased concern
about global warming coupled with depletion of the supply of fossil fuel
sources. With this background, we take this opportunity to highlight the
theme Photovoltaic Materials for this multi-journal “Virtual Special Issue”
which features content drawn from ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces,
Chemistry of Materials, Macromolecules, and Langmuir with articles published
over the past 6 months.”*
