Dear students and postdocs,
Apparently there is a "free" (as in beer) quantum Monte Carlo summer
school held in Urbana in July. Let me know if you are interested in
attending.
See attached message.

Learning from Expert Innovators

Abstract
In this seminar I’ll present interim results of a multiyear study of the
processes, principles and practices used by people (and groups)
acclaimed as expert innovators within their specific contexts. For the
purposes of this study, we have defined innovation broadly, as activity
that leads to the creation of valuable novelty, leaving open the
criteria by which value is determined. This allows us to consider
empirically whether there are commonalities in the processes, management
principles, and practices in use across a range of fields in which
innovation is considered important, from the arts, to design,
entertainment, media, and even scientific research. Our methodology is
inductive and case-based. Our objective is to advance general
theoretical understanding of work and management approaches that
repeatedly generate valuable novelty, and to relate the emerging theory
to theoretical constructs in adjacent areas of research, such as
business innovation, the psychology of individual creativity, and the
social psychology of creativity. We find numerous categories of
commonality that transcend fields of application.

Dear group,
We had many interesting discussions today. One was on the nature of
dipole-dipole interaction, I am attaching a file (my notes) on
dipole-dipole interaction in a system with many dipoles, with a
derivation of the form of the interaction, which we had a discussion about.
I am hoping to have another file on the application of dipole-dipole
interaction to quantum dots fairly soon. I will eventually put these on
the group Wiki.
Cheers,
Ali

Dear Alejandro, Leslie, James and Ivan,
To follow up on the excellent session that we had today, I think that
each one of you should present some of the topics.
I am suggesting (you can modify this list) that you pick one of the
following topics and present each other week.
These are the topics:
- Greg Scholes's paper (get from Wiki and/or Masoud)
- Friesner paper on Excitation Energy transfer
- Mino and Fleming paper (math paper)
- A chapter on the textbook of energy transfer (to be obtained soon)
If you have any preference let me know and let us know who is the first
volunteer.
Alan
PS. Masoud will put the PDFs online. I will put the Friesner

Abstract
While the elusive quest of perfect-by-design software continues, in the meantime
software/OS's unfortunately still continue to expand on Murphy's laws of failures.
At the OS level, the complexity of run time software interactions and especially
the plethora of add-on device drivers makes providing for robust OS operations
an even harder challenge. As analytical/formal techniques are often constrained
in handling the operational and growing OS state space complexity, this work
investigates the use of complementary experimental techniques to first profile
and locate robustness vulnerabilities, and subsequently add (post-design) wrapper
code to enhance OS robustness. To systematically drive this process, a basic objective
targets development of realistic and measurable OS robustness quantifiers.
The talk delves into the joys and travails of experimentation abetting theory and vice-versa!
