Initiative in Innovative Computing @ Harvard
Seminar Series
Wednesday, September 26, 2007; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
James Sethian, Professor, Department of Mathematics, University of
California at Berkeley
Seminar Title: Advances in Advancing Interfaces: Building
Semiconductors, Inkjet Plotters, Medical Scanners, and Robotic Devices
Abstract:
Propagating interfaces occur in a wide variety of settings, and
include ocean waves, burning flames, and material boundaries. In
addition, problems not thought of as moving interface problems often
can be recast as advancing fronts, including finding robotic
navigation and finding shortest paths on contorted surfaces.
We shall show how to cast these problems as partial differential
equations, and provide the fundamental mathematical, geometric and
algorithmic ideas behind Fast Marching Methods and Level Set Methods.
These methods easily accommodate merging boundaries, three
dimensionsonality, and complex dynamics.
Applications will focus on industrial engineering collaborations
which have led to robust codes for semiconductor manufacturing, the
manufacturing of inkjet plotters for building plasma displays, image
segmentation and tracking in cardiac scanners, and robotic navigation
around obstacles.

Dear all,
Our open house will be Oct 10th, 6 PM in the department center. We will
be getting Mexican food, and have a really cool poster idea that we will
discuss sometime next week with the "open house poster committee". The
committee is chaired by Leslie and all of us will contribute something
to the poster. More to come later.

Dear group,
Alejandro Perdomo is the seminar coordinator for the group. Let's try
to get regular group meeting results reports during the 2007-2008
calendar year. He will be taking your titles and abstracts and adding
them to the Google calendar that results in this:
http://aspuru.chem.harvard.edu/Seminars/
I tried to update it with what we have right now, but Alejandro will
schedule reports as they go along. I propose that Jake talks to us
about Landau-Zener transitions on the 18th at 5 PM, and then that
Alejandro takes up scheduling (and updating of the calendar) from
then onwards.

"What's Cool about Fortress"
Talk by: Guy L. Steele Jr., Sun Fellow, Sun Microsystems Laboratories
The Fortress programming language is now catching on outside of Sun.
During 2004-2006 it was an internal research project, funded in part
by Sun's contract with DARPA for High Productivity Computer Systems.
In January 2007 it became an open-source project with an open-source
community. People outside Sun are now writing Fortress code and
testing it using the open-source Fortress interpreter. In this talk
we will discuss some of the recent activity in this community as well
as features of Fortress that have made it so appealing. While the
language design was originally aimed at high-end ("petascale")
parallel supercomputers, it appears also to be well-suited for
programming multicore chip and multicore cluster systems.
This joint meeting of the GBC/ACM and the IEEE Computer Society will
be held in the MIT Media Lab Bartos Auditorium (MIT room E15-070) on
Thursday, September 20th from 7-9PM.

public lecture at the Harvard Museum of Natural History on the
evolutionary diversity of Caribbean lizards. Free.
. Friday, September 21: The Sustainable Science Program hosts a day-long
celebration of sustainable science and research across the university.
*New Course*:
. ENVR E-119: Sustainable Buildings: Design, Construction, and
Operations [Harvard Extension School]
This course approaches sustainable development for buildings by
examining how building components and systems affect human
performance and well being. Sustainable development starts with site
planning and evaluation, and proceeds through construction,
commissioning, and occupancy phases. The course includes many case
studies of historic and contemporary structures exemplifying various
sustainability features. The course presents rating systems for high
performance buildings developed by the US Green Building Council and
other international organizations. Field trips are arranged to tour
buildings
and green roofs in the Boston area. Harvard University is used as a
primary case study.
