IIC-CS Joint Colloquium
BigDog, a Dynamic Quadruped Robot
Dr. Alfred Rizzi, Lead Robotics Scientist, Boston Dynamics
WEDNESDAY, October 8, 2008; 4:00 pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Abstract
This seminar will describe several ongoing legged robot projects at
Boston Dynamics. The focus will be on BigDog, a quadruped robot that
can walk, run, balance, climb, carry loads, resist kicks and
negotiate rough terrain with new levels of dynamic mobility,
robustness and performance. The talk will explore issues related to
the system design, performance metrics, efficiency and the
experimental evaluation of such systems.
Bio
Alfred Rizzi is the Lead Robotics Scientist at Boston Dynamics. He is
responsible for real-time embedded software development and is an
expert in robot control, distributed systems and system integration.
Prior to joining Boston Dynamics in 2006, he was an Associate
Research Professor in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon
University, where he directed research projects focused on hybrid
sensor-based control of complex and distributed dynamical systems.
Highlights of these projects include the development of embedded
software systems and automated behaviors for novel legged mobile
robots (RiSE and RHex). Dr. Rizzi received the Sc.B. degree in
electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
in 1986. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. from Yale University in 1990
and 1994 respectively. He is a co-recipient of the Nakamura Prize for
best paper at the International Symposium on Intelligent Robots and
Systems in 2001. He currently serves on the editorial board of the
International Journal of Robotics Research.

Dear group,
I can't find one of my books, and I suspect I might have given it out to
someone. It's called Differential Geometry, it's cover is dark red or
brown, it's hardcover, and it's at least 30 years old. Let me know if
you have it.
Thanks,
Ivan
Dear colleagues,
Tomorrow, I will be Prof. Troy Van Voorhis' host for dinner. If you are not
attending the Ig nobel prize ceremony and would like to join us, please let me
know:

Currently, two other postdocs have shown interest in going out for dinner with
Prof. Van Voorhis. We are leaving the Chemistry Department at around 6:00 PM.

Consortium in Energy:
-------------------------------
Dear group graduate students,
For all of you interested in the energy consortium program (graduate program
in energy), please apply before Oct 31. Note you need a letter from me, that
I will need to produce with time in advance, so please let me know ASAP if
you intend to apply. I would strongly suggest to ask for the fellowship as
well :)

DATE: September 30, 2008
SUBJECT: New Graduate Consortium on Energy and Environment**
I am delighted to announce the launch of the *Graduate Consortium on Energy
and Environment*, a new interdisciplinary training opportunity for doctoral
students interested in energy issues. The Consortium will foster a new
community of students who will be well versed in the broad, interconnected
issues of energy and environment while maintaining their focus in their
primary discipline.
Starting in the Spring 2009 semester, the Consortium will admit its first
cohort of students, who will enroll in a suite of new courses that
constitute the program requirements. Mike Aziz of SEAS will offer a course
on energy technology and energy systems; Bill Hogan and Erich Muehlegger of
the Kennedy School will co-teach a course on energy policy; and in Fall 2009
I will offer a course on energy consequences. Students will also be
required to participate in a weekly reading seminar that will provide an
overview of the energy field from a wide range of perspectives, and will be
led by faculty members from around the university. We hope your department
will consider whether one or more of these new courses might satisfy
elective requirements for students in your program. Students enrolled in
the Consortium will be expected to fulfill all the requirements for the
Ph.D. in their home department or program and must have the approval of
their advisers to apply.
Students accepted into the Consortium will be eligible to apply for graduate
fellowships provided by the Center for the Environment, which will
coordinate with the GSAS on fellowship decisions. Consortium students will
also be eligible to receive up to $1,000 to attend conferences or other
professional activities during their time in the program.
The attached brochure offers more information on the Consortium and details
on how to apply. The deadline for applications is October 31st with a
second application cycle in May 2009.
*Please help us get the word out by forwarding this brochure to students who
might be interested in the program.* Feel free to contact me or Jim Clem if
you have any questions in the meantime. Thanks for your help.
