Dear Alán Aspuru-Guzik,
PLEASE KEEP THIS EMAIL FOR FUTURE REFERENCE in the event you would like to
view, modify, withdraw the abstract or preprint, or to prepare a visa
letter.
You are now listed as a contributor of the following abstract,
ID/Username: 1280185
Password: 357024
Title: Implementing Quantum Chemistry Calculations for Arbitrarily Complex
Environments
Submitted to Division of Physical Chemistry
for the 238th ACS National Meeting, Washington, DC, August 16-20, 2009 in
Washington (from 08-16-2009 to 08-20-2009).
Receipt of this notice does NOT:
- indicate that it has been accepted into the technical program.
- guarantee that the submission was complete or correct.
This notice informs you that an abstract has been initiated on the OASYS
system and that you are listed as the submitting author.
1. Prior to the abstract submission closing for the meeting, check that the
abstract is complete and conforms to the ACS submission guidelines:
- This abstract is not being submitted more than once to this meeting.
- If the abstract is accepted, the presenting author will register for
the meeting and present the paper.
- If the presenting author is not able to attend the meeting to make
the presentation and has not designated a substitute presenter, then the
presenting author will withdraw the abstract prior to the meeting.
Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in rejection of this
abstract and abstracts from the presenter at future national meetings.
To view your abstract and to correct any part of it or to withdraw, please
go to the Online Abstract Submission page for this meeting.
Click the link labeled "View/Modify/Withdraw Abstract, Preprint/Visa Letter"
and gain access using the ID Number and Password given above. You can also
check the status of the abstract (whether or not it has been accepted) using
these instructions.
2. After the abstract submission close date, contact the symposium organizer
or program chair with any change or withdraw requests.
The contact information for your symposium organizer can be found at the end
of this message.
3. If you are submitting the abstract to ENVR, FUEL, PETR, POLY or PMSE, a
preprint is also required. Preprints should be submitted according to
division templates and instructions.
4. If you have already submitted an abstract and need to submit a preprint,
then you may retrieve your abstract using the above instructions. Click the
link in the Abstract Control Panel to Submit Preprint. If you did not submit
a preprint when you submitted your abstract, it is important that you access
your abstract account and add a preprint in order for it to be reviewed by
the organizers.
5. If the abstract is accepted, the abstract account in OASYS will show a
new link, Visa Letter, in the Abstract Control Panel. If you are an
international speaker who needs a visa letter to support your visa
application for travel to the United States, then the Visa Letter link will
allow you to generate your own visa letter. See
http://www.acs.org/meetingsfor additional information on guidelines
for visa applications
6. Each author who has provided an email address in OASYS will receive a
message for each abstract. If you receive MORE THAN ONE MESSAGE like this
and you did not intend to submit more than one abstract, please withdraw the
extra abstract(s) using the above instructions; this procedure will let
program officials know which abstract(s) to review.

How do the new forms of connectivity enabled by the internet affect flows of power in society? Does electronic communication create new forms of self-identification, new political sensibilities, or new avenues of empowerment? Or do old hierarchies get reinforced and familiar divisions, such as those between male and female or right and left, get more firmly entrenched through new routines? How do design choices affect relationships of power, for example, by selecting who should be connected to whom and across what sorts of spaces? Drawing on studies of teenagers and professional designers, cities and the blogosphere, this distinguished panel will lead us on a fascinating journey across today's changing public spheres. They will offer tantalizing glimpses into the democratic imaginations taking shape in cyberspace.
This event is organized by the Program on Science, Technology, and Society, at the Harvard Kennedy School and co-sponsored by the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Graduate School of Design, and the Harvard University Center for the Environment. The recent perspective on using noise in nanoscale gates is reminiscent of
the role of decoherence in some of the systems we study. Perhaps we might
like to draw deeper parallels. The article is here:

Dear All,
I've been compiling a quantum computing toolkit for Matlab for some
time now, and it's starting to get close to the point of usefulness.
I'd appreciate it if those of you who use Matlab in your work would
download it, try it out and give me some feedback.
Comments on the overall design and usability are especially welcome.
You can get it by checking out the latest revision from the SVN repository:
https://secure3.svnrepository.com/s_aspuru/qi_toolkit
The toolkit will be released as an open source project when it's
mature enough (soon?), so if you'd like to contribute you are welcome
to do so.
Ville
P.S. If the SVN client says you don't have the right to access the
repository, let me know and I'll fix it.

IIC Colloquium - From Galaxies to Sensor Networks: Science in an
Exponential World
March 11, 2009; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Alex Szalay, Alumni Centennial Professor, Department of Physics and
Astronomy, The Johns Hopkins University
Abstract
Scientific data are doubling in quantity every year. As a result, new
paradigms are emerging in every area of modern science, and almost
every aspect of the scientific method is undergoing fundamental
change. This talk will discuss these challenges and new approaches for
dealing with the enormous data sets of today and tomorrow, using
examples from astrophysics and space science. The emergence of
pervasive computing — small sensors everywhere – is already having an
impact on not only how we do science but also our everyday lives. The
engineering principles behind pervasive computing are also finding
their ways into corporate data centers.

Hello A-G Group,
I am giving the Applied Physics 298 lecture from
12:00 - 1:30 pm today (Monday, March 9) in Pierce
209. It will probably be too simple for most (all) of
you, but should you be interested, the abstract is
attached.
Cheers,
Mike

Dear Group,
Alan's activity report is due in mid-March. I need to compile a list of
your awards, fellowships, invited or contributed talks/posters, etc. The
easiest, most multi-purposeful way to do this would be for you to update
your CVs and send to me. I can pull the information from there.
Please send by Fri 6 March.
Thanks very much,
Anna
