"Spectroscopy of complex molecular systems: Physics on an exciton cake-walk"
Jasper Knoester, Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, University of
Groningen
abstract
The concept of excitons, collective excited states, is well-known in
solid-state physics. It was first developed by Frenkel in the 1930's to
explain the absorption spectrum of perfect molecular crystals, in which case
the excitons are simple Bloch waves of excitation. Over the years, it has
become apparent that also less regular structures carry delocalized
excitations, which are responsible for many of their electromagnetic
properties and energy transport characteristics. In this presentation, I
will address two classes of such systems. The first class are molecular
J-aggregates, large self-assembled structures containing up to 1000's of
molecules, which play a role in opto-electronic applications and natural
photosynthetic systems. The second class are polypeptides and proteins, in
which case collective vibrations are the excitations of interest. The
irregular nature of these systems and the occurrence of fluctuations in
their host, provide a complex and dynamic landscape in which the excitons
are created, evolve, and decay. I will address the basic physics of these
systems, some of their intriguing properties, and the theoretical tools used
by us to analyse and predict (ultrafast) spectroscopic experiments in the
visible and the infrared used to probe these properties.

Jasper Knoester received his MSc and PhD in Theoretical Physics at the
University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, in 1983 and 1987, respectively.

Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Groningen, The
Netherlands. He conducts his research in the Theory of Condensed Matter
Group at the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials in optical and
electronic properties of condensed phases, in particular of (bio)molecular
aggregates and conjugated polymers; vibrational dynamics and infrared
spectroscopy of polypeptides and proteins; low-dimensional systems; spin
systems; disorder and localization; QED near dielectric interfaces; light
scattering on photonic crystals, plasmonics.

Hi,
There is no topological meeting today, since I haven't gotten anyone to talk. There won't be one next week either since it's Thanksgiving.
I can probably find someone the week after Thanksgiving though.
Cheers,
Cedric

Dear Excitonics folks,
We will be having a joint meeting to talk about *excitons* this *Friday,
November 18 *between the groups of Alan Aspuru-Guzik, Seth Lloyd, and
Jianshu Cao.
The meeting will be held Friday at *10 AM *at *MIT *in the quantum
information common room *26-201*. At the meeting, members of each group
will give an informal overview of the excitonics research they have been
doing, followed by discussion.
Hope to see you all there!
P.S. I do not have current e-mail addresses for all the members of the Cao
group, so if someone from the Cao group can forward this e-mail to the rest
of the group, I would be extremely grateful.

David Tannor - Simple Trajectory Method for Non-adiabatic Dynamics
The Division Room, 2:30 – 4 p.m. on Tuesday 11/29.
A simple trajectory method for treating non-adiabatic dynamics is
presented, based on a generalization of Bohmian Mechanics with Complex
Action (BOMCA)1,2 to multiple potential energy surfaces. The trajectories
evolve on multiple potential surfaces according to Newton’s laws, but with
complex position and momentum. Rather than hopping from surface to
surface, the trajectories affect their counterparts on the other
surfaces(s) via the difference in their complex phase3. The method has the
following attractive features: 1) it can be derived in a simple and
straightforward way from the time-dependent Schr”odinger equation; 2) it
leads to different trajectory dynamics on the different surfaces
(non-Ehrenfest dynamics) and hence gives correct dynamics in the
asymptotic region of the potential; 3) it allows not only the calculation
of asymptotic probabilities, but also the reconstruction of the
time-dependent wavepacket, hence decoherence does not have to be
introduced in an ad hoc manner. Results are presented for the three
benchmark systems introduced by Tully, both in the diabatic and adiabatic
representation, showing generally excellent agreement of the method with
exact quantum calculations.
