Hi,
Apparently this winter school on excited-state properties is free of
charge. I guess that's the charm of doing it in Helsinki during December.

Date: 2011/11/3
Subject: Invitation to the 27th winterschool in Helsinki (Dec 2011)
Dear all,
also this year it is my pleasure to anounce that the registration for the
"Winter School in Theoretical Chemistry" is now open. The topic of this
years school is "Excited-State Properties". It will be held from December
12th–15th, 2011 in Helsinki. For more information see
http://www.chem.helsinki.fi/**Info/WinterSchool/ws2011.html<http://www.chem.helsinki.fi/Info/WinterSchool/ws2011.html>
At our homepage you can also find more information about previous schools:
http://www.chem.helsinki.fi/**Info/WinterSchool/<http://www.chem.helsinki.fi/Info/WinterSchool/>
The winter school is free of charge. Of course you need to take care of
transportation and hotel rooms yourself. Some information on reasonably
priced accomodation can be found on our pages (see the first link).
And please do not forget to bring a poster!
I hope I will see many of you in Helsinki this december! This is of course
a perfect opportunity fo a 2010 summer school reunion :)
If you have any questions regarding the school do not hesitate to ask.
Best wishes,
Michael

Sounds interesting.
Sent to you by Man Hong via Google Reader: Organization of the
Bacterial Light-Harvesting Apparatus Rationalized by Exciton Transport
Optimization. (arXiv:1111.0069v1 [physics.bio-ph]) via quant-ph updates
on arXiv.org on 11/1/11
Authors: Elad Harel
Photosynthesis, the process by which energy from sunlight drives
cellular metabolism, relies on a unique organization of
light-harvesting and reaction center complexes. Recently, the
organization of light-harvesting LH2 complexes and dimeric reaction
center-light harvesting I-PufX (RC-LH1-PufX) core complexes in
membranes of purple non-sulfur bacteria was revealed by atomic force
microscopy (AFM)1. Here, we report that the structure of LH2 and its
organization within the membrane can be largely rationalized by a
simple physical model that relies primarily on exciton transfer
optimization. The process through which the light-harvesting complexes
transfer excitation energy has been recognized to incorporate both
coherent and incoherent processes mediated by the surrounding protein
environment. Using the Haken-Strobl model, we show that the
organization of the complexes in the membrane can be almost entirely
explained by simple electrostatic considerations and that quantum
effects act primarily to enforce robustness with respect to spatial
disorder between complexes. The implications of such an arrangement are
discussed in the context of biomimetic photosynthetic analogs capable
of transferring energy efficiently across tens to hundreds of nanometers
