Workshop description:
Maxwell’s demon is still alive. Even though Landauer and Bennett allegedly
exorcised him, we are witnessing his vigorous activity in the recent
literature in thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, quantum information,
and information science. Moreover, the progress in experimental techniques
now allows us to see him in the lab. We are now more able than ever to
gossip about his whereabouts and activities in nature. It should be the
right timing to provide researchers in relevant communities with an
opportunity to share their ideas. The main interests of this workshop will
include but not limited to
- the fundamental roles of information in the foundations of physics,
- the interplay between different fields through information,
- the natural dynamics from the viewpoint of information processing,
and
- the modern Maxwell’s demon in the lab or in the universe.
We hope we shall see the diverse faces of the demon and his physics.

Title: Electrons Moving Atoms in Nanoelectronics
Abstract:
It is well known that an electrical current will flow through a conductor upon application of a voltage source such as a battery. However, it is less well appreciated that electrical current flow in turn also drives the motion of atoms in a conductor. In the present day age of nanoscale technologies, this aptly named “electromigration” of atoms can dramatically influence performance and reliability. In this talk atomic-scale perspectives on this phenomena, suitable to a general computational science audience, will be presented as part of an effort to fully control correlated electron-atom motion through materials engineering at the atomic scale.
Bio:
Kirk H. Bevan received his doctorate in electrical engineering at Purdue University in 2008. From 2008 to early 2011 he was a joint postdoctoral fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and McGill University. Since 2011 he has been on the faculty of engineering at McGill University in Materials Engineering. His research is focused on enabling the crossover of novel physical phenomena into real-world engineering applications with an emphasis on electronic device materials design.
