Title: Quantum simulators using superconducting circuits
Abstract:
Quantum simulator is an experimental study of an interesting
quantum system by use of an alternative quantum system in which the
same Hamiltonian is implemented. In this talk, I will present
analog quantum simulators of open system dynamics with a precisely
engineered quantum environment. Open quantum system approaches are
widely used in the description of physical, chemical and biological
systems. One of the famous models of this type is the Holstein model
describing the interaction of an electron on a 1D lattice with one
vibrational mode per lattice site. This model has applications in
quantum chemistry and condensed matter physics, for example, in
photosynthetic complexes, molecular aggregates, polymers, manganites
or superconductivity. Then, a detailed study of the dynamics of
electron-phonon interaction becomes desirable. Although many
analytical and numerical methods have been applied to this problem,
their applicability is often limited either to a particular
investigation, e.g., low-lying excited polaron states or the Green
function, and for a specific parameter regime. We propose an analog
quantum simulator for the dynamical electron-polaron coupling model
and demonstrate that it can be constructed using currently available
technology of superconducting circuits. With such a quantum simulator,
one can do more extensive investigation including exciton transport,
spectral density, absorption spectra and the wide range of parameters. Our
proposed quantum simulator can reproduce the quantum dynamics of a
standard as well as generalized multiple-mode Holstein model.
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Charles Mathy
Dear all,
It is a pleasure to announce Borja's talk on Friday, March 29th, at 11:30.
Borja Peropadre is a PhD student in the group of Juan Jose Garcia-Ripoll at CSIC in Madrid (Spain).
http://quinfog.iff.csic.es/borja-peropadre
He will visit our group this week, March 26th-29th.
He is interested in our research and in discussing with us, therefore I will organize a schedule with private discussion on Tuesday and on Thursday.
Please, let me know if you are interested in discussing with Borja (otherwise I will try to select a representative sample based on our research topics).
-- Title:
Controlling quantum systems in circuit QED designs.
-- Abstract:
The filed of circuit QED is widely considered the on-chip realization of cavity QED, where superconducting artificial atoms and microwave photons interact at the quantum level. The large tunability attainable in these solid-state devices, has made possible the achievement of the the so-called strong and ultrastrong coupling between light and matter.
In this talk, I will show how we can take advantage of this large degree of control in circuit QED to manipulate the light-matter interaction, and ultimately the microwave photons in a resonator or propagating in an open transmission line. This offers a wide range of applications, ranging from quantum communications, condensed matter physics, to simulations in Quantum Field Theory.
Best regards,
Gian Giacomo

Dear all,
We had originally scheduled the drinks reception and poster session for
Saturday, but due to booking restrictions we have had to move the date to
Sunday 24th, 16:00 at the Hyatt hotel in Cambridge. I hope that this is not
a problem, and that you and your researcher team are still able to make it
along.
The general goal of our visit is to exchange research ideas, discuss
important topics and to explore possible collaboration opportunities. There
will be 10 of us in total from Bristol. We are making arrangements to visit
you all individually, were we hope to give a couple of focused talks
(~15min), and perhaps hear some reciprocal talks from your researchers,
followed by discussions and lab visits where appropriate.
The aim of the mini workshop on Sunday 24th is to provide a platform for
further and rather informal discussions. Please bring along your
researchers, and a selections of posters to present. To help us cater for
numbers, could you please answer the following questions:
1) Can you attend the workshop, and if so how many people will you bring
along?
2) How many posters you would like to present?
Please let me and Meagan know if you have any questions or concerns.
I look forward to seeing you in Boston,
Kind regards,
Mark

Subject: Fwd: Postdoc position in Krylov's group: please pass along to
qualified candidates
To: Alan Aspuru-Guzik <alan(a)aspuru.com>
Alan, greetings from LA!
I am looking for a postdoc with strong method-development skills. Please
pass this along to qualified candidates. Your help will be greatly
appreciated.
Best regards,
Anna.
A postdoctoral position is available in Krylov’s group at USC (
iopenshell.usc.edu/krylovgroup). Advanced expertise in electronic structure
methodology, math and programming techniques is required. The C++
experience is highly desired.
There are several ongoing projects to choose from:
1. Developing new theoretical framework and computer codes for compressing
the data, exploiting the sparsity and linear dependancies in tensors
commonly used in electronic structure calculations (electron repulsion
integrals, wave function amplitudes, etc). This entails developing new
reduced-rank tensor representations as well as implementing established
techniques such as resolution-of-identity and Cholesky decomposition.
2. Developing new approaches for calculating photoionization cross sections
based on Dyson orbital formalism.
3. Further development of SF-DFT approach.
The position is for one year, subject to renewal for the second year based
on performance and upon mutual agreement. Please send the CV and letters
of recommendation to krylov(a)usc.edu.

Dear quanta,
In April, we will have two visitors, both from (the other) Cambridge,
and both information theorists. Both former Bristolians too. I
promise they are distinguishable in many other ways. They are:
Will Matthews, Apr 8-10, talk date TBD but probably Apr 9
http://arxiv.org/find/quant-ph/1/au:+Matthews_W/0/1/0/all/0/1
Toby Cubitt, Apr 22-16, talk on Apr 26
http://arxiv.org/find/all/1/all:+cubitt_t/0/1/0/all/0/1
I mention this now in case anyone want to set up meetings with them.
If so, I suggest emailing them directly. Also, if you don't know
them, I suggest checking out their papers.
