Study Card Pro Tips The answers to your burning my.harvard questions may
lie here!
We have heard from many students, advisors, and faculty about their
experiences with the new my.harvard. Thousands of people are successfully
using the new system but since it is new to everyone I am writing with some
frequently asked questions and useful tips.
See the information below and be sure to visit the my.harvard Knowledge
Center <http://about.my.harvard.edu/help>.
The Registrar’s Office is here to help you. We are located on the 4th floor
of the Smith Campus Center. You can also email us at
registrar(a)fas.harvard.edu or call at 617-495-1543.
Best wishes,
Mike Burke
Registrar of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Harvard University
*I was blocked from enrolling in English or Math courses because of an
enrollment limit!*
- Try it again
- Some courses had an incorrect enrollment limit and these have been
fixed. If you try again you will be able to enroll successfully.
*What if my advisor hasn’t signed my study card and I need to section or
join a lottery?*
- There is still time. You can request permission to enroll in a course
(or join a lottery) even while yours are in place. While you should arrange
to meet with your advisor as soon as possible, they have been instructed to
release your hold only when they have had a substantive discussion with you
about your plans. You should not pressure them to release a hold simply so
you can section or join a lottery. It is up to you to initiate contact with
your advisor if you have not already heard from them.
- How do I get the advising hold lifted
- Contact your advisor and schedule a meeting so you can have a
substantive advising conversation. Only when both you and your
advisor feel
well-informed about your study plans, requirements, and resources should
your advisor sign your study card (i.e. release your advising hold). The
sooner you arrange to meet with your advisor the sooner you can get that
hold released.
- What does this have to do with instructor permissions
- Nothing! You can request instructor permission or validate your
study card even while you have holds in place.
- Economics 10a
- If you did not enroll in Econ 10a yet there is still time to
section once your holds are removed.
- Ethical Reasoning 39
- You can request permission for this course (and any others) even if
your hold is in place.
*Study Card validation tells me I have a conflict but I don’t see how!*
- It is checking all course components
- If you cannot identify the conflicting courses on your study card,
it may be helpful to switch the Study Card view from “Primary On” to
“Primary Off.” Primary Off will display all the course components
(discussion sections, labs, etc), and one of these components may be the
time conflict.
- What is validation
- You can validate the courses in your study card to see if there are
time conflicts, pre-requisites, and instructor permission. Be sure to
re-validate your study card to check to see whether any changes have been
made.
*How do I simultaneously enroll?*
- The study card system enforces time conflicts (including lectures,
sections, labs, etc). You can check for conflicts by validating your study
card. Students are not ordinarily permitted to simultaneously enroll in
courses that overlap in time. However, there are limited exceptions as
described below.
- CS50
- CS50 is the only course in which undergraduates may simultaneously
enroll without approval of the Administrative Board. Enroll in the other
course on your study card and then email the Registrar’s Office at
enrollment(a)fas.harvard.edu requesting us to add you to CS50.
- Other courses
- Undergraduates may request permission to simultaneously enroll in
courses other than CS50 by petitioning the Administrative Board.
First you
should read the student handbook section on simultaneous
enrollment to see
the requirements and exceptions. Then, if you meet the conditions for an
exception, consult with your Allston Burr Assistant Dean in your house or
your Resident Dean of Freshmen to submit a petition.
*What is Add/Drop all about?*
- How does it work
- You can add or drop courses on your study card after study card
day. Instructors’ approval is required to add any course. Starting on the
second Monday, undeclared undergraduate students will need to meet with
their advisors before they can add or drop courses. It is your
responsibility to connect with your advisor in order to proceed.
Visit the
Knowledge Center for more detailed instructions on adding, dropping, and
swapping courses.
- When does it start/stop
- Add/Drop period begins September 11. Please note the following
deadlines:
- September 18, deadline to cross-register
- September 18, deadline for graduate students to add or drop
without a fee
- September 21, deadline for undergraduates to add or drop without
a fee (3rd Monday)
- October 5, deadline for undergraduates to add or drop (5th
Monday)
- October 19, deadline to withdraw from a course (7th Monday)
- October 19, deadline for graduate students to add a course
- October 27, deadline for graduate students to drop a course
- What about dropping cross-registrations
- To drop a cross-registration at another school send an email to
enrollment(a)fas.harvard.edu with your request.
*How do I change a course’s grading status?*
- How do I do it
- After study card day you can find the form for this in the
documents center of my.harvard.
- When is the deadline
- October 5 for undergraduates
- October 19 for graduate students in designated language courses
*How do I section for a course?*
- What is sectioning
- The sectioning tool in my.harvard enables students to submit their
top section meeting time preferences, which are assigned by the course’s
instructors or teaching fellows.
- How do I know if I need to do it
- If your course is using the sectioning tool and offers sectioning
preferences, you will see a gear appear on the study card next to the
enrolled course once sections preferences are available.
- How do I make a change
- You can rank your preferences until the course makes the
assignments. After that time consult with your teaching fellow or
instructor to request a change.
*Whatever happened to my Plan of Study?*
- Tell me how to get a copy of it
- You can view your student record (SREC) and your Plan of Study
(including the courses you listed to meet your degree
requirements) in the
documents center of your my.harvard portal.
*What about concentrations and secondary fields?*
- New declarations
- Plan of Study, concentration declarations, and secondary field
petitions are coming to my.harvard later in September.
- Changes
- If you cannot wait for the new tool, email the new concentration to
request the change. Include a list of all courses you would like to use
toward the new concentration (past and future). The DUS will respond via
email, CCing enrollment(a)fas.harvard.edu.
- Can I enroll in my new concentration’s courses even though I haven’t
switched yet
- Yes. However, you may need to request permission of the instructor
or DUS of the new concentration if the course is limited to declared
concentrators.
*Course Web Sites*
- How do I get to them
- You can access the course web site from the my.harvard Course
Search. Once you enroll in a course it will be listed on your my.harvard
home page and you can click from there. You can also find your enrolled
courses listed in the Quick Links tab of my.harvard.
- Can I access them during before I enroll in the course
- Course web sites are available to all students during shopping
period. After study card day only enrolled students can access them.
*TIME and Independent Study basics*
- How do I enroll
- Visit the Knowledge Center
<http://about.my.harvard.edu/faq/enroll-time-3003000> for
step-by-step and visual instructions for enrolling in time and 300/3000
level courses.
*Cross-registration basics*
- How do I do it
- Cross-registration starts at coursecatalog.harvard.edu. Follow the
instructions there.
- Where are the placeholders
- We no longer use placeholders.
- How do I drop a cross-registration
- To drop a cross-registration at another school before you see it
listed on your courses in my.harvard, send an email to
enrollment(a)fas.harvard.edu with your request. Once you see the course
on my.Harvard you can drop it there.
- When will they show up in my.harvard
- Once the instructor and host school registrar approves your
cross-registration the course will appear on my.harvard within several
business days. If a week goes by following notification of
approval and the
course is still not showing on my.harvard send an email to
enrollment(a)fas.harvard.edu
<enrollment(a)fas.harvard.edu?subject=Verifying%20Cross-Registration>
to inquire about the status.
- What does pending mean
- Pending means the instructor or host school registrar has not yet
acted on your request to enroll.
*Instructor Permissions*
- Visit the Knowledge Center
<http://about.my.harvard.edu/instructor-permissions> for more helpful
information.
- When will they respond to my request
- Instructors are responding to permission requests every day. They
are as eager to finalize enrollment as you are and they will respond
accordingly. The Registrar’s Office also sends reminders.
- How do I check the status of my request
- You can view the status of your request on your study card. There
is a legend that shows what the various status symbols mean.
- Do I need to wait for my holds to be cleared before requesting
permission
- No. You can request permission even while you have holds on your
enrollment.
*Where can I get in-person help with my.harvard*
- Student ambassadors
- There are undergraduate and graduate student ambassadors ready to
assist you. Visit this link <http://about.my.harvard.edu/ambassadors>

Hi all,
As we touched on briefly during yesterday's group meeting, we are
approaching the deadlines for applying for time for 2016 on various
supercomputing clusters. If you are interested in applying for time, please
meet me at the *theory couches* (aka where our celebration was
yesterday) *Tuesday
at 2 PM*. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different
clusters and machines, and what an application requires of you.
If you cannot attend this meeting in person, please send me an e-mail ASAP
so that we can have the same discussion in writing. If I do not see you at
the meeting and do not hear from you by midnight Tuesday I will assume you
will not be applying for time.
Thanks!
Sam
Dear colleagues,
In September, I will be launching a Perovskite Seminar Series to provide a platform to connect researchers at MIT working on perovskite solar cells and other optoelectronics and to keep us up-to-date with the latest in the field. The series, sponsored by the Center for Excitonics, will be monthly and consist of a seminar with invited faculty or a lunch talk with postdocs or senior graduate students. I will be kicking things off with a broad overview of the field and the efforts underway in the Bulovic group on September 15 at 4:30 pm in 36-428<http://www.rle.mit.edu/excitonics/events/metal-halide-perovskites-for-photo…>. I hope the seminar series will be of interest to faculty, staff and students and will facilitate fruitful discussions and collaborations.
To hear about upcoming seminars, please sign up to the mailing list: http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/perovskite-seminars.
Best,
