HQOC/ITAMP Joint Quantum Sciences Seminar Wednesday, September 16, 2015 NOTE: Special Location: Science Center, Lecture Hall D Prof. Nuh Gedik, MIT Shining light on Topological Insulators Topological insulators are novel materials that do not conduct electricity in their bulk but possess exceptional conducting electronic states on their surface. These surface electrons have a number of highly unusual characteristics: (i) they behave like massless relativistic particles similar to photons (ii) their spin is locked perpendicular to their momentum and (iii) this state is robust against moderate disorder. Understanding and characterizing unique properties of these materials can lead to novel applications such as current induced magnetization or extremely robust quantum memory bits. In this talk, I will first give a brief introduction to these materials and then describe our recent experiments in which we used ultrashort laser pulses to probe and control properties of the topological surface states. Utilizing the short duration of these pulses, we succeeded in capturing femtosecond movies of the electronic energy bands in a three dimensional manner. These movies reveal an exotic hybrid state between electrons and light, which was predicted theoretically but has never been observed in solids before. Our research seeks to make data visualization--originally a tool for experts--accessible to everyone. To succeed as a mass medium, visualization must be simple to use, easy to share, and suited to the kinds of data that people care about. We will discuss these challenges and projects which address them. First, we’ll present work that explores the collaborative dimension of visualization. Second, we’ll consider socially important forms of data such as text and images that don’t fit traditional visualization approaches. We present new techniques to provide insight into media from books to photographs. Finally, a radical level of simplicity in both authoring and consumption is required for visualization to succeed on a massive scale. They are well known for their contributions to social and collaborative visualization, and the systems they’ve created are used daily by millions of people. Before joining Google, the two founded Flowing Media, Inc., which focused on media and consumer-oriented projects. Prior to Flowing Media, they led IBM's Visual Communication Lab, where they created the ground-breaking public visualization platform Many Eyes, which introduced visualization to millions of users worldwide. Viégas has been named by multiple publications as one of the most influential women in technology. Her visualizations of email and online conversations led the way for new social media interfaces. Wattenberg, as a director of R&D at Dow Jones, created some of the earliest visualizations for digital journalism. Viégas holds a Ph.D. from the MIT Media Lab; Wattenberg has a Ph.D. in mathematics from U.C. Berkeley. Their academic work has won multiple “best paper” accolades, and they’ve received several top design and technology awards. Please post and forward to your groups CENTER FOR EXCITONICS SEMINAR SERIES Metal-halide perovskites for photovoltaic and light-emitting devices* September 15, 2015 at 4:30 pm/36-428 Sam Stranks Massachusetts Institute of Technology [stranks.02] Metal halide perovskites are exotic hybrid crystalline materials developed out of curiosity. Unexpectedly, solar cells incorporating these perovskites are rapidly emerging as serious contenders to rival the leading photovoltaic technologies. Power conversion efficiencies have jumped from 3% to over 20% (certified) in the last three years. Closely following the solar cell development, the light-emitting properties of perovskite semiconductors have also been reinvigorated. Here, I will give a general overview of the rapid progress in perovskite devices. I will present recent advances here and elsewhere to better understand the operation of the state-of-the-art solar cells and the properties that have delivered high performance light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and lasers. I will cover topics including charge carrier diffusion and recombination mechanisms, as well as ion migration and its potential impact on device performance and hysteresis. Understanding these processes is key to further development of the field and to bringing the perovskite technology to commercialization. Sam Stranks is a Marie Curie Fellow based jointly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge. He completed his PhD in 2012 as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, working on carbon nanotube/polymer blends. He then worked as a post-doctoral researcher in Henry Snaith's group at Oxford University where he was also a Junior Research Fellow at Worcester College. His research generally focuses on the optical and electronic properties of emerging photovoltaic and optoelectronic systems. *This talk is the first of the Perovskites Seminar Series organized by Sam Stranks and sponsored by the Center for Excitonics.
