Dear quanta, This talk may be of interest to many of you. ------- Speaker: Stephanie Wehner (QuTech, Delft) Date/time: Thursday 9/8/2016, 3 PM Location: 32D-677 (Stata Center, LIDS seminar room) Title: Quantum communication networks: the certifiable road ahead Abstract: What precisely is a quantum communication network? While quantum communication is often associated solely with quantum cryptography, it can enable many other interesting applications. Here, we propose stages towards the development of a full blown quantum communication network - a quantum internet. Each stage of this development is distinguished by the successively larger type of applications that it supports, and we present tests to certify the successful attainment of each stage by implementations. In the second part of this talk we then zoom in further into testing quantum communication and devices. The first is a procedure which we call capacity tomography which allows us to estimate the (single shot) capacity of a quantum communication channel. This procedure is easier than performing full tomography, and can deal with arbitrarily correlated errors and memory effects in the quantum devices. The second is to test the performance of local quantum network nodes, and also quantum computing devices. Concretely, we derive confidence bounds for the use of randomized benchmarking to characterize quantum gates which are several orders of magnitude better than previous estimates, enabling the procedure to be applied to many qubit systems. Speaker bio: Stephanie Wehner is an Associate Professor in quantum information. Her goal is to understand the world of small particles - the laws of quantum mechanics - in order to construct better networks and computers. Quantum bits behave quite differently than classical bits, and allow us to solve tasks that are provably impossible for any classical device.Stephanie's research advances quantum information theory and its applications to both computer science and physics. She has worked extensively in quantum cryptography and communication, and one of her goals is to overcome the theoretical challenges in building large scale quantum networks. As part of the Quantum Internet Team at QuTech, she works with experimentalists in order to jointly realize this goal. Stephanie is one the founders of QCRYPT, which has become the largest conference in quantum cryptography. She has written numerous scientific articles in both physics and computer science. From 2010 to 2014, her research group was located at the Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore, where she was first Assistant and later Associate Professor. Previously, she was a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology in the group of John Preskill. In a former life, she worked as a professional hacker in industry. HQOC/ITAMP Joint Quantum Sciences Seminar Wednesday, September 7 , 2016 4:00 PM, Jefferson 250 Prof. Franco Nori, RIKEN, Saitama, Japan; University of Michigan "Extraordinary properties of light: Evanescent waves and quantum spin Hall effect" Maxwell's equations ultimately describe properties of light, from classical electromagnetism to quantum and relativistic aspects. The latter ones result in remarkable geometric and topological phenomena related to spin-1 massless nature of photons. By analyzing fundamental spin properties of Maxwell waves, we show that free-space light exhibits an intrinsic quantum spin Hall effect-surface modes with strong spin-momentum locking. These modes are evanescent waves that form, for example, surface plasmon-polaritons at vacuum-metal interfaces. Our findings illuminate the unusual transverse spin in evanescent waves and explain recent experiments that have demonstrated the transverse spin-direction locking in the excitation of surface optical modes. Optical systems combining balanced loss and gain provide a unique platform to implement classical analogues of quantum systems described by non-Hermitian parity-time (PT)-symmetric Hamiltonians. Such systems can be used to create synthetic materials with properties that cannot be attained in materials having only loss or only gain. We report PT-symmetry breaking in coupled optical resonators and observe non-reciprocity in the PT-symmetry-breaking phase due to strong field localization, which significantly enhances nonlinearity. Our results could lead to a new generation of synthetic optical systems enabling on-chip manipulation and control of light propagation. References: K.Y. Bliokh, D. Smirnova, F. Ivan Kozyryev, Doyle Group "Sisyphus Laser Cooling of a Polyatomic Molecule" The use of laser radiation to cool atomic motion is a common prerequisite for creating ultracold quantum gases. We demonstrate magnetically-assisted Sisyphus laser cooling of the triatomic free radical strontium monohydroxide (SrOH) using two different electronic transitions. We also study loss channels to vibrational states (including the bending mode) and highlight proposed extensions to more complex species. This approach opens a path towards creating a variety of ultracold polyatomic molecules, including much larger ones, by means of direct laser cooling.
