Dear IACS friends,
Once again, IACS will present a special two-week program of events to build computational
knowledge and skill. ComputeFest 2014 will take place January 13-24, culminating in a
symposium focusing on the promise and challenges of data science.
Please note the details and links below. We are pleased to invite you to the symposium;
our annual ComputeFest workshops (Jan 13-17); and the Computational Science Ventures (CSV)
mini-symposium (Thursday, Jan 23), focusing on entrepreneurship in computational science.
Feel free to share this announcement with colleagues. All events are free and open to the
community. Note that workshops (see below) are primarily intended to benefit the Harvard
academic and research community; should interest in an event exceeds capacity, Harvard
students, faculty and researchers and staff will be given priority.
1. SYMPOSIUM
TITLE: "Weathering the Data Storm: The Promise and Challenges of Data Science"
DATE: Friday, Jan 24
TIME: 9:00am- 5:30pm; continental breakfast 8:30-9am
LOCATION: Science Center Hall B, 1 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA 02138
EVENT WEBSITE:

REGISTRATION: Free; no registration required.
SPONSORS: Liberty Mutual Insurance (platinum) and WMWare (gold)
PROGRAM DETAILS: Industry leaders, researchers, and Harvard students will come together
for a day of lively conversation about the sweeping advances in data science at the
intersection of statistics, computer science, and various domains. Leading experts in data
science will talk about the way organizations are using careful analysis of data to
address important real-world issues, about the challenges of big data, and about the
future of this exciting emerging field. This one-day symposium will bring together data
analytics professionals, domain scientists, academic researchers and users, and fosters an
exchange of ideas through invited talks, panels, and plenty of audience interaction.
SPEAKERS:
• Ryan Adams, Harvard University
• Luke Bornn, Harvard University
• Jeff Heer, University of Washington
• Diane Lambert, Google
• Fernando Perez, UC Berkeley
• Claudia Perlich, Dstillery
• Bonnie Ray, IBM
• Cynthia Rudin, MIT
