Dear group,
Has anyone taken the copy card and maybe not returned it to the usual spot?
Please let me know if you have it with you or if it is anywhere in the
office so that I can grab it and use it today.
Thanks,

University of Virginia
Seminar Title: Making Heritage Virtual: Rome Reborn 1.0 and Other 3D
Modeling Projects at the Institute for Advanced Technology in the
Humanities
Abstract:
This talk will discuss the digitization of 3D cultural property such
as pottery, statues, buildings and even entire cities. Current
projects at IATH include Rome Reborn, an international initiative to
create 3D computer models of Rome's urban development, from first
settlement to the city's depopulation in the sixth century A.D. Rome
Reborn 1.0, the first result, shows Rome as it might have appeared in
320 A.D. The talk will conclude with discussion of some new
directions and challenges: populating models with people and their
activities, using them as tools for discovery, and collecting and
disseminating real-time 3D models on the Internet.
Upcoming IIC Seminars:
Continue to stay up to date with our IIC Seminar Schedule.

Dear group,
Joel's friend was appointed for 3:30 pm tomorrow so hopefully Ivan has
finished his section by that time and there is no conflict. She comes from
David Cory's group and will talk about her research project on NMR and QIP.
Cheers,
-A
One minor thing I forgot to mention:
Please do not eat or touch the zoanthids. They are possibly the most
toxic creatures in the world. They contain palytoxin:
In which case not even Prof. Kishi will be able to save you.
Ivan
Dear group,
Thanks to Shuting's good graces, we now have a group aquarium. It is
between my desk and Alejandro's. You are welcome to come introduce
yourself to the inhabitants or come watch them when you are stressed out
(it is very soothing). Currently, there is a small conch, some
zooanthids, a bunch of snails, at least three featherdusters, and
assorted worms and small starfishes. You are welcome to suggest names
for the different creatures, and then a committee consisting of Ivan
will decide which names to give them. Two rules, though: the conch is
already named Herbert, and no one can be called Professor Mukamel.
Also, a few aquarium rules. Please don't turn the light on or off or try
to clean it (Ivan will do that). And don't tap on the glass.
Ivan

Dear group,
As you see below, Stephen Jordan is inviting you all to his thesis defense.
I have a previous commitment (that I will try to escape, if possible, but I
doubt I will. It has to do with my chairing of the computing committee and
the use of electronic lab notebooks), but hopefully some of you can attend.
You will learn a lot of quantum computing for sure!
Cheers,
Alan
