Initiative in Innovative Computing @ Harvard
Seminar Series
Wednesday, April 23, 2008; 4:00pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Tony Hey, Corporate Vice President of the External Research Division
of Microsoft Research
Seminar Title:
eScience, Semantic Computing and the Cloud: Towards a Smart
Cyberinfrastructure for eScience
Abstract:
In the next decade, frontier research will require collaborations of
globally distributed groups in fields that may have hundreds of
terabytes of research data. Addressing the challenges of the
“eScience” agenda will require an ecosystem of semantic computing
technologies to facilitate information sharing and discovery, enable
reasoning and allow us to start thinking about knowledge and how it
can be handled by computers. Software+service, with scientific
services delivered from the cloud, will become an increasingly
accepted model for research. This talk will review this vision and
explain the need for semantic-oriented computing by exploring
projects that have successfully applied relevant technologies.
Upcoming IIC Seminars:
Continue to stay up to date with our IIC Seminar Schedule.
Parking is available in the 52 Oxford Street Garage. Please tell the

Celebrate Earth Day this week! Come hear Congressman Edward
Markey discuss US leadership on Global Warming TODAY in
the Yenching Auditorium at 5:00 pm
________________________________________
Finding a secure, safe and reliable source of energy to power
world economic growth will be one of the great challenges of
this century. The Harvard University Center for the Environment
invites the Harvard community to take up the challenge by
participating in this ongoing series of discussions.
**THE FUTURE OF ENERGY**
Rep. EDWARD J. MARKEY
Chairman, House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming
7th Congressional District (D-Mass)
"Reclaiming U.S. Leadership on Global Warming
TODAY at 5:00 pm
Harvard University
Yenching Auditorium
2 Divinity Avenue, Cambridge, MA
First elected to Congress in 1976, Edward J. Markey has constructed
an extraordinary legislative recordhelping to shape more than 20
years of telecommunications policy while championing consumer rights,
health reform, the elimination of large monopolies, the conservation
of environmental resources, the reduction of nuclear threats and the
strengthening of our homeland security. He continues to be one of the
most articulate and informed voices in Congress concerning both energy
and environmental policy.
Rep. Edward Markey was appointed by Speaker Pelosi as Chairman of the
new Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming at the
beginning of the 110th Congress. Rep. Markey has long been active on
energy and environmental issues, reflecting his commitment to
maintaining the quality of life and economic opportunity in New
England. The president of the League of Conservation Voters has
said of the chairman "there is no greater environmental champion in
Congress than Ed Markey as we fight to head off the looming catastrophe
of climate change."
For more information about Rep. Markeys work on the Committee,
please visit: http://globalwarming.house.gov/
The Future of Energy lecture series is sponsored by the Harvard
University Center for the Environment with generous support from
Bank of America. This lecture is free and open to the public.

away for the weekend earlier, let me tell you the bad news because you have
to come first to group meeting :). Salvador will be taking about Quantum
Walks, part 2 @ 4pm in the usual spot, Naito 030. Next week we will have a
visitor, Jonathan Skone from Penn State.
Enjoy the first tate of summer!
Dear group,
If anybody has the May and Kuhn from the library can you please:
a) Let me know
b) Return it, and re-check it out on your name? I already have renewed it 6
times and *have* to return it by 4/30
Thanks,

Wednesday, April 16, 2008; 4:00-5:30pm
60 Oxford Street, Room 330
Bernard Frischer, Director, Institute for Advanced Technology in the
Humanities, University of Virginia
and
Dean Abernathy, Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture,
University of Virginia
Seminar Title: Making Heritage Virtual: Rome Reborn 1.0 and Other 3D
Modeling Projects at the Institute for Advanced Technology in the
Humanities
Abstract:
This talk will discuss the digitization of 3D cultural property such
as pottery, statues, buildings and even entire cities. Current
projects at IATH include Rome Reborn, an international initiative to
create 3D computer models of Rome's urban development, from first
settlement to the city's depopulation in the sixth century A.D. Rome
Reborn 1.0, the first result, shows Rome as it might have appeared in
320 A.D. The talk will conclude with discussion of some new
directions and challenges: populating models with people and their
activities, using them as tools for discovery, and collecting and
disseminating real-time 3D models on the Internet.
