Message:
Imperial College London intends to appoint a significant number of
non-clinical Lecturers to our Faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Natural
Sciences, with outstanding ability and potential. Our aim is to extend and
consolidate our existing research interests, and also to embark upon new
areas that fit within our academic strategy. With this in mind, we are
seeking applications from candidates with a background in disciplines
within, or complementary to, science, technology and medicine. We are
looking to appoint those who will contribute to the College's mission, who
will enhance our international reputation and who have the potential to
become academic leaders.
Imperial is a partner in the Thomas Young
Centre<http://www.thomasyoungcentre.org/>(TYC), the London Centre for
Theory and Simulation of Materials, which
provides an outstanding environment for research with particular strength in
first-principles electronic structure calculations. A list of academic staff
associated with the Thomas Young Centre at Imperial may be found at:
http://www.thomasyoungcentre.org/people/?institution=10
and prospective applicants are encouraged to contact the person working in
the area closest to them or the TYC Director Prof. Mike Finnis before
submitting an application.

Dear group,
Just thought you might find this info helpful.
If you find it inconvenient to carry around the RSA key fob for odyssey,
have a look at the software solution below. You can also use it on your
smartphone. Please ask Suvendra (or rchelp) for the soft token.
Best,
Patrick

Greetings Patrick,
Attached is a ZIP file containing an RSA SoftToken for authenticating with
Odyssey.
The passcode for installing this token is: ******
In order to use the RSA Soft Token, you will need to download the
appropriate software from RSA, since this works on several different
platforms including Windows, Linux, Blackberry's and some other devices.
Further information, including download links are available from the
following RSA website: http://www.rsa.com/node.aspx?id=1313
Once you install the RSA Client, you can then install this soft token by
double clicking it or importing the file.
Best regards,
Suvendra
Dear Quanta
We are meeting today at 11. Sergio Boixo will tell us what he is up to.

Dear Group,
Todd from Shipping and Receiving just delivered the 13 new computers from
Dell. A palette of 8 boxes is outside M104-105. Another palette of 5 boxes
went to Cv-B21. The 13 group members who signed up for a new desktop need
to pick them up IMMEDIATELY because the boxes are light enough to steal
away.
I am waiting for the Net Term agreement from NewEgg to purchase the 18
monitors. I hope to have that order placed and shipped sometime next week.
Thanks,
Anna

FYI, by way of Mike.
Since the workshop is more instructional, it doesn't seem to have an
opportunity for research presentations. If Alan deems it necessary for
someone to attend, please see me about the travel since FAS policy will
consider this similar to a fellowship opportunity.

Hi Anna,
There is an NNIN workshop in Cornell that I think Alan’s group would be very
interested in (Nov. 14-16). My Cornell-NNIN counterpart, Derek Stewart, is
organizing it and he asks if we can scare up some more Harvard participants.
I will go and I will probably drive, so expenses will not be so great.
Anyway, I don’t want to bother Alan with this right now. I’m sure he would
be okay with at least sending around the announcement (with a copy of this
letter) . Can you do that for me ? I also am cc’ing Derek on this email.
To Derek,
Alan Aspuru-Guzik is one of the people whose group would definitely be
interested. He is away right now with personal time off so I am sending this
to his administrator Anna Shin.
Thanks,
Mike

Besides today's special group meeting by Matt Broome, we have Sergio
presenting in regular group meeting tomorrow.
Time: Friday October 22 at 11:30 AM
Place: Naito 030
Here's the abstract:
Preparing thermal states of quantum systems by dimension reduction
We present an algorithm that prepares thermal Gibbs states of one
dimensional quantum systems on a quantum computer without any memory
overhead, and in a time significantly shorter than other known
alternatives.
Specifically, the time complexity is dominated by the quantity
N^(|h|/T) where N is the size of the system, |h| is a
bound on the operator norm of the local terms of the Hamiltonian
(coupling energy), and T is the temperature. Given other results on the
complexity
of thermalization, this overall scaling is likely
optimal. For higher dimensions, our algorithm lowers the known
scaling of the time complexity with the dimension of the system by one.
