There is a talk in the Harvard Physics Department tomorrow by Steven White,
the father of DMRG:
"The First Realistic Quantum Spin Liquids", Steven White, University of
California, Irvine(Jefferson 250.....Tea served in Jefferson 450 @ 3:30 pm)
Mar 7, 2011
4:15p - 5:15p
Description A quantum spin liquid is a solid whose atoms have magnetic
moments but,
because of quantum fluctuations, these moments fluctuate like a liquid
even at zero temperature. Two dimensional spin liquids have been suggested
as a way to produce high temperature superconductivity, and to build quantum
computers. Just as helium is the only element which is a liquid at zero
temperature, 2D spin liquids have been extremely difficult to find, despite
decades of effort, raising the question, do realistic spin liquids even
exist? Recently, spin liquids have been found both experimentally and in
numerical solutions of realistic models. I will give a broad overview of
spin liquids and then focus on our recent simulations of the Kagome lattice,
where we find a spin liquid ground state.

Hey everyone,
I will be giving group meeting next week on Monday 7th at 2:30 pm in the
Amdur room.
I will be presenting on work I have been doing on organic semiconductors
in molecular crystals. The focus of my work is on modeling the
environment at the organic-organic interface and gaining a better
understanding of the separation of the charge transfer state. I will
discuss the methodology used, then give some current results with focus
on the charge transfer states. Finally, I will talk about what methods
I am using to make a more realistic interface and hopefully provide a
few preliminary results.

Please sign the obnoxious get well card that is circulating around. It's

knee surgery and will be out for 2 months, and she was quite unhappy about
it.
If everyone can sign it now, I can mail it out today.

(with apologies if you receive this message multiple times)
This is a reminder that the early registration deadline for the 11th
Canadian Summer School on Quantum Information and the 8th Canadian
Student Conference on Quantum Information is in one week, March 11th.
Places are limited and based on first come first served. Please pass
on this information to your students and colleagues. Thanks to our
generous sponsors, we will cover 50% of the local expenses (meals and
lodging) of all students, and additional funds are available for
students with greater needs.

NSF Proposal Preparation 101
Barry Schneider, Office of Cyberinfrastructure (OCI),
National Science Foundation
Writing an NSF proposal for new faculty can often be a challenge since
navigating the NSF electronic systems as well as constructing a
compelling proposal need to be considered. In most cases the new
faculty hire has not been tutored by their advisors in the proposal
writing process. In the talk, I will discuss both of these topics
with the goal of providing sufficient information to make the process
more user friendly and less intimidating.
Not really a meeting or seminar, but Anton Zeilinger will be speaking
at Harvard Book Store on March 7 at 7pm to promote his latest popular
science book, "Dance of the Photons: From Einstein to Quantum
Teleportation".
