Subject: [Aspuru-Guzik group list] NSF Solar Fest June 13th 4-6 PM. Save the
date! Scipplets competition.
To: Cynthia Friend <cfriend(a)deas.harvard.edu>, Eric Mazur <
mazur(a)physics.harvard.edu>, Michael Brenner <brenner(a)deas.harvard.edu>, Bob
Graham <graham(a)deas.harvard.edu>, "Anna B. Shin" <anna(a)chemistry.harvard.edu>,

*Re: SolarFEST, June 13th 4-6 PM.*
Dear Friend, Mazur, Brenner and Aspuru-Guzik groups,
As you probably know, the four of our groups are in a collaborative effort
during the NSF SOLAR program. We are organizing an NSF SOLAR get-together to
see short presentations by the NSF SOLAR team members, and also to make a
competition of energy-related facts, to be converted in web-deployable
"Scipplets".
*a) SCIPPLET COMPETITION (Your entry is needed)
*What is a Scipplet? It is a Flash-based content piece that can be embedded
in any website. We are currently focusing on developing Scipplets about
energy.
The best way to see what they are is to go to
http://cleanenergy.harvard.edu/ and go to the bottom right of the page, to
see some Scipplets in action. You can reload the page to see more of the
ones we already have.
Each one of you is expected to send us at least one Scipplet for the
competition. It should be about energy or the environment. See the current
Scipplets: They are usually 1-6 panels of a few lines of text and associated
graphics. If you get the graphics from the web, please specify the source,
please do so if you create them yourself.
I attach a Powerpoint template for the Scipplet Competition, please send
your entry as an attachment to scipplets(a)gmx.com no later than Sunday, June
12th, 2011. The jury is led by Professor Carlos Amador-Bedolla, from UNAM,
the creator of most of the scipplets shown in the website.
*b) PRESENTATIONS
*The first part of our meeting will be short 3-slide presentations from
members of the NSF SOLAR team. We ask that each member of the SOLAR team
teams up with a member of another group (E.g. a joint Mazur-Friend
presentation, etc.) and sends me (alan(a)aspuru.com) the pairing so I can make
a short presentation schedule. The presentations should be short (~5
minutes).
*c) GROUPS GET-TOGETHER
*The rest of the time, we can enjoy food and a get-together between the
groups, as well as discussing possible spinoff projects or collaborations.
Summary
* To be able to come, you have to submit at least one Scipplet draft in
Powerpoint format to the competition.
* Food will be available at the event
* An Amazon gift certificate will be given to the best Scipplet draft.
* Please RSVP at the following Doodle Poll
http://www.doodle.com/r2chwr5hpdzstp53
* We will provide food.
*Where: June 13th 4 PM, Pfizer Hall, Mallincrodt (12 Oxford Street)

When: Friday June 10 from 11:30 to 12:30
Where: Mallinckrodt 217
What: Alex Eisfeld is up for group meeting.
Title: "Absorption and Energy Transfer on Quantum Aggregates - from
Molecules to Rydberg atoms"
I this talk I will try to focus on various aspects of the coupling of
electronic excitation to nuclear degrees of freedom.
In the case of molecular aggregates the influence of discrete internal
vibrational modes of the chromophores on the absorption spectrum is
discussed.
Energy transfer in the FMO complex ;) is handled using the non-Markovian QSD
approach.
In the second part of the talk it is shown how Rydberg atoms can be used to
investigate excitonic systems. As an example it is shown how the coupling
between excitonic and nuclear degrees of freedom allows to adiabatically
transport entanglement along a chain of Lithium atoms.

Subject: [Postdocs] Summer TGIF Round 2 on Friday!
To: "xavier.andrade.valencia(a)gmail.com" <xavier.andrade.valencia(a)gmail.com>
It's time for Round 2 of our weekly summer TGIFs!
Even if you were KO'd in Round 1, come out this Friday at 5pm to the
Naito courtyard for some snacks, drinks, and socializing. You don't
need ASCII art to motivate you to come do you? Thanks a lot to the
Ritter Lab for hosting this time. See you there!

Thanks for the crappy monitor Man Hong!
Group: we still need a crapper mouse and dead computer. If we can't find
some to switch out, we'll have to give them this newish mouse (it's <2 years
old) and a working computer (it's pretty old). CEP guys: are there any
lying around in drawers, shelves or under desks? Graveyard have any?
We need to take care of this by Wed latest.
Thanks,

Hi all,
We're working with the FAS IT computer exchange again (see Anna's old email
below for an example), and we'd like to give them the oldest, crappiest
mouse and monitor we have. We can replace yours with a new Logitech mouse
and a 19" widescreen monitor. Email me to arrange the swap.
Also, if you have a dead computer on hand, we can swap it with a decent
one. Again, email me and we'll work something out.
Thanks,

Hi group,
I have another job interview next week and I need some help to practice my
talk. This will be a different talk from the last one.
Monday 2pm in Division Room.
Thanks in advance!

What do you conclude from this graph?
The graph below (taken from a paper Environment assisted quantum transport by Patrick Rebentrost, Masoud Mohseni, Ivan Kassal, Seth Lloyd and Alán Aspuru-Guzik) shows the calculated efficiency of transport (blue curve) of an exciton through at network in the presence of a dissipative and dephasing environment. The horizontal scale is the magnitude of the dephasing rate. n.b. it is a logarithmic scale and spans 10 orders of magnitude. The vertical line is the estimated dephasing rate at room temperature.
To me the curve shows that the efficiency is quite insensitive to the environment, i.e. it is greater than 80 per cent for dephasing rates varying by eight orders of magnitude! In terms of biological functionality I would say that the environment matters little to the efficiency, except when the system couples very strongly to the environment.
However, other people interpret this graph in a very different way. In a 2010 paper in PNAS,

Dear REU mentors and PIs,
Orientation for the REU students will be on Tuesday, June 7. Students will
meet with us in the morning, and then we will ask you to join us in the
lobby of Maxwell Dworkin at noon. We will provide a pizza lunch (please let
us know of any special dietary requests). Once you and your student have
finished lunch, you have your student for the rest of the afternoon to get
him/her acquainted with your research group. We suggest that you discuss the
project and provide some general references, give them a brief safety
orientation, get them settled into their workspace, arrange for access to
the lab/building, and introduce them to other group members.
Since most of you do not know your REU student yet, we have assigned tables
and areas to research groups so that you can meet them at your table. We
will also have nametags for the REU students and for you - please pick up a
nametag at the registration table outside Maxwell Dworkin G115.
