As many of you already know, a protein causing AIDS in rhesus monkeys
that hadn't been solved for 15 years was resolved by Foldit players

Dear group members,
When I came to the office (M104) early this morning the door was
unlocked and no one was in the office. Following Anna's email on lab
security may you ensure that the doors are locked when you leave the
office in the evenings? Thank you very much and have a nice weekend.
Best,

*A final word on recombination in intermediate band photovoltaics
In what I hope will be my last group meeting dedicated solely to
nonradiative recombination, I will discuss new predictions of nonradiative
rates in intermediate band photovoltaics (IBPV). I will introduce IBPV,
which hold the promise of radical improvements in photovoltaic efficiency. I
will focus on building predictions from a Marcus-theory-like transfer rate.
I will give a variational argument that (contrary to prior prediction) a
metallic intermediate band will not slow recombination and also a
perturbative prediction of actual recombination rates. I will close with
prospects for successfully implementing the IBPV concept.*

Dear CCB Researchers,
As an open-campus located in an urban setting, Harvard typically realizes an
increase in thefts when the academic year begins in the Fall. Several
unsecured laptops have been reported as stolen from within the CCB complex
in the past few months.
I write to remind you that laptop computers and other valuable personal
items should be secured at all times in order to prevent their theft.
Laptops should be secured with a laptop security cable even when being
used, as it is common to be momentarily drawn away thus leaving the laptop
unattended.
Please contact Mike Paterno, CCB Facilities Manager, (copied above) with any
questions you might have regarding securing your personal affects.
Best,
Allen

Location: Pierce Hall 209, 29 Oxford Street, Cambridge
Time: Informal lunch with speaker, 12:30 pm in *Cruft 403*. Talk, 1 pm in Pierce 209
Title: The Reduced Basis Method for Fast and Accurate Solutions of Parametrized Partial Differential Equations
Abstract:
The Reduced Basis method is a well-established approach for acceleration of high-fidelity numerical approximation of parametrized partial differential equations. The method is divided into a computationally intensive Offline stage (performed on a supercomputer, for example) in which a reduced order model is generated, and a very inexpensive Online stage in which solution fields, quantities of interest and rigorous error bounds are evaluated in real-time. We demonstrate the Reduced Basis methodology through a number of examples drawn from continuum mechanics. We then discuss recent results on a component-based approach to model reduction, which combines the Reduced Basis method with domain decomposition. This framework enables construction of system models from a library of parametrized Reduced Basis building blocks (generated Offline), and yields significant advantages in terms of computational cost and Online flexibility.
Bio:
David Knezevic is a Lecturer on Computational Science at the Harvard Institute for Applied Computational Science (IACS). He was previously a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, working with Professor Anthony Patera. Before that he attended the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and obtained a Ph.D. in Numerical Analysis with Professor Endre Süli. He is originally from Perth, Western Australia, and graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2004. Knezevic's research interests are in the areas of Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing. He focuses on numerical discretizations of partial differential equations, with an emphasis on both theory and implementation of numerical methods. He is interested in applying numerical methods to a range of different of different continuum mechanics application areas, including fluid dynamics, heat transfer, solid mechanics and acoustics. Currently his main research interests are on model reduction of parametrized partial differential equations via the Reduced Basis method.

Subject: Bristol Lectureship in Quantum Information Theory
To: Andreas Winter <a.j.winter(a)bristol.ac.uk>
Dear colleague,
we have the following job opening in Bristol (Lecturer, equivalent
to Assistant Professor in other countries). Please distribute it
to anyone in your group or acquaintance who might be interested in
applying.
Best wishes, - Andreas.
===========================
Applications are invited for a Lectureship in Quantum Information
Theory, tenable from 1 January 2012 or a date to be agreed. A
Lectureship is similar to an Assistant Professorship in North America.
We seek an outstanding researcher and teacher from any area of
quantum information theory who will be expected to develop an
internationally leading independent research programme as well
as to undertake teaching and administrative duties as appropriate.
The post will be held in the School of Mathematics or the School
of Physics, by agreement between the successful candidate and the
University. In either case, the post will be within the inter-
departmental Quantum Computation and Information Group (QCIG), one
of the world’s leading groups on all theoretical aspects of quantum
information processing; see http://www.cs.bris.ac.uk/Research/QuantumComputing/
for more information on staff and research interests. This is an
open-ended post, subject to the University's standard procedures.
It is expected that interviews will be held during the week commencing
5 December 2011.
See http://www.bris.ac.uk/boris/jobs/feeds/ads?ID=100671 for full
details of the post and the application process.
