Dear Group,
FYI: if we host special seminars for our visitors, e.g., Prof. Lidar's past
QI seminar in August, then it may be helpful to include the Boston Area
Physics Calendar mailing list when advertising the seminar (depending on the
situation). In any case, below are the instructions for posting to BAPC.
I'm subscribed to the list, so I can send future talk announcements without
them being held up for spam check. If interested in the list, feel free to
subscribe below.
Best,

Hi all,
Seems like we're going to move our group meetings to *2 to 3:30 PM on
Mondays*. The Division Room is free most of the weeks at that time. I would
suggest that Man-Hong, who was supposed to give group meeting this Friday
16, gives group meeting on Monday 19 starting the new schedule.
I guess I do not welcome objections to the new time, as the doodle poll is
over and everyone in the mailing list was informed to complete it.

Hi everybody,
The screen outside of M-104 is ready to show images and videos from
our research. The system is based on a web interface
(caral.chem.harvard.edu) where you can upload (and delete) the files
that are going to be displayed on the screen.
The webpage is password protected and is only accesible from
harvard.edu machines. The url with the user/password is:
https://group:web13AsGu@caral.chem.harvard.edu/
To make this work everyone must upload content: posters, short
presentations, scipplets, videos, animations, paper abstracts, talk
and conference announcements, etc. and keep it updated. Currently you
can upload raster images (png, jpg), videos (avi, mov) and pdf
documents.
If you have any problem with the system or any ideas to improve it,
please let me know.

Dynamics of ultracold bosons in tilted optical lattices
Sandro Wimberger
(Complex Dynamics in Quantum Systems, Institut für Theoretische Physik,
Universität Heidelberg)
Modern quantum and atom-optical experiments allow for an unprecedented
control of microscopic degrees of freedom, not just in the
initialization but also in the dynamical evolution of quantum
states. This talk focuses on the dynamics of ultracold bosons in
optical lattice structures. As a paradigm, we report on experimental
as well as theoretical results on the interband transport in a tilted
lattice, i.e., a realization of the famous Wannier-Stark problem. An
extended Bose-Hubbard model is presented for two coupled energy
bands. For reasonable lattice sizes, this model gives access to the
full quantum spectrum, which allows us a good characterization of
"horizontal" (spatially) and "vertical" (energetic) quantum
transport. For specific parameters, resonant tunnelling between the
bands can be exploited to map the original model onto a much simpler
effective spin Hamiltonian. General perspectives on future directions
of our study of strongly correlated bosons in lattice structures
conclude the talk.

To:
dear friends,
I would like to draw your attention on the school on ``Quantum Monte Carlo
Methods at Work for Novel Phases of Matter'', to be held in ICTP
(Trieste), next year (from January 23 to February 3).
The school is mainly addressed to PhD students and young researchers.
It will consist in theoretical and practical sessions. Please, see the
details at:
http://www.democritos.it/montecarlo2012/
We would be glad if you can spread out this information to anyone who
would be interested.
my best regards, Federico Becca
Attention: new poster printing instructions are below. Ken Toy at UOS Mail
Services will now charge a fee for poster printing. As before, you must
provide a 33-digit account string to use this service. Due to the new
poster printing fee, it is imperative that you check with me first before
placing an order. Many of you work on multiple projects, so it is extremely
important to use the correct fund.**
Going forward, *you must copy me on your email to Ken* and I will reply with
the correct account string. We will update the wiki with this information.

Dear CCB Researchers,
I am writing to share an update on the poster printing services available to
us at Harvard. For many years, Ken Toy in the Mail Services group (
www.uos.harvard.edu/transportation/mail_services) has provided large format
poster printing to CCB at no charge. Ken will gladly continue to provide
this service to us, but he must now charge a fee to offset materials and ink
costs:
- up to 30" x 42" = $20.00
- 36" x 48" = $30.00
- other larger sizes will = $2.50 per square foot
Ken estimates that these costs are substantially less (~1/2) than what we
would encounter at Kinkos or similar commercial printing businesses.
Please call or email Ken with questions or to place an order. Some
important details about the ordering process:
- provide a 33 digit billing code when ordering
- PDF files (cropped to the equivalent size that they will be printed at)
should be emailed
- posters will be delivered to the CCB front office (you will receive a call
or email to pick it up)
