Hi Everyone,
Hopefully everyone got through the blizzard yesterday safely and warmly.
This week, Peter will be giving us group meeting. Please see below for his
title and abstract of his talk.
Thanks,
Jennifer

What can quantum complexity theory tell us about quantum simulation?
In this talk I will describe some results of quantum complexity theory that
are relevant to the project of simulating physical systems on quantum
computers. I will then interrogate the relevance of these results to the
electronic structure problem.

Dear all,
In the *acknowledgements* section of all our papers, don't forget to
acknowledge Harvard Research Computing for the use of the Odyssey cluster.
It is very important as this is the way RC gets more resources to be able
to help us. I copy James Cuff, their director who just noticed that one of
our papers that uses their facility (and also a Intel Phi card they gave
us) does not acknowledge them.
I will be vigilant but please make sure you do this in all the papers we
submit that use Odyssey from now on.
PS. Nico: Can you add this to the group wiki finding the appropriate
language? Maybe James (copied) can send us the language he prefers in the
papers.

Dear Colleagues,
I would appreciate your help in identifying candidates for a NRC
postdoctoral position at the Naval Research Lab. We are seeking a theory
postdoc who would conduct research on various aspects of quantum
information processing, including quantum control and decoherence, with
focus on spins in quantum dots, superconducting qubits and defect centers
in solids. More information can be found here

LabCode=64&ROPCD=641525&RONum=B8102
Please forward to potential candidates among your students and postdocs.
There is a requirement that the applicant be either a US citizen or a
permanent resident (green card holder).
Thank you & best regards,
Sophia Economou
Applied Math is looking for a TA in a matlab/scientific computing class (AM111). If you are interesting you can contact Thomas Fai (tfai(a)seas.harvard.edu<mailto:tfai@seas.harvard.edu>). His description of the class and TA duties are below.
Hope everyone stays warm and safe during the storm!
Kind Regards,
Jon

Hi Jonathan,
Just to follow up on Nitin's email--I'm not sure if you have took AM111 or have experience with Matlab/scientific computing from elsewhere, but if so (or if you're interested in learning) I know you did a good job with Nitin's class so I wanted to reach out to you.
Currently, I'm planning on dividing the course roughly into four sections: numerical linear algebra, numerical methods for ODE, PDE, and Monte Carlo techniques. The students will also do an open-ended final project.
The main responsibilities of the TA will be grading homework and holding office hours. I know you are toward the end of your studies and there may be weeks where you won't have as much time as usual. I will be do my best to be flexible and make our schedules work.
Please let me know if you may be interested in this possibility, and feel free to contact me with any questions.
Best,
Thomas Fai

Hi Jonathan,
Hope you are doing well.
Thomas Fai whom you have met (we share our office), is urgently looking for a teaching fellow for his course on Scientific computation and was wondering if you would be available or if you know someone who might be. If possible, kindly contact Thomas, who email address is included.
thanks.
As a result of the storm, Adam Kaufman's visit tomorrow and Wednesday is being postponed to next week (possibly overlapping with another candidate, Javier Sanchez-Yamagishi). More details will follow soon.
