pass this along to them too please!
The grants are undersubscribed and students who apply by the deadline
(Monday!) are likely to succeed.
Here is the procedure:
The instructions can be found at
http://www.aps.org/units/dcp/awards/gsta.cfm
They need only:
1) submitted abstract from student with sorting category number
2) statement that the student is (or will be) a member of DCP at the time of
the conference
3) estimated expenses for conference
4) VERY brief letter of recommendation from the advisor
Please have them send documents to nathanson(a)chem.wisc.edu with "APS

Finding secure, safe and reliable sources of energy to power world economic growth will be one of the great challenges of this century. The Harvard University Center for the Environment invites the Harvard community to take up the challenge by participating in this ongoing series of discussions.
THE FUTURE OF ENERGY
Fall 2008
R. James Woolsey
VantagePoint Venture Partner, VantagePoint Venture Partners
“Energy, Security, and the Long War of the 21st Century”
Harvard University
Science Center Lecture Hall D
One Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA
James Woolsey will speak about the potential transformations proceeding from innovations in energy, including the growth of alternatives to conventional petroleum, and the impact of these and other developments on national security. He puts special emphasis on homeland defense and how we can make our society and economy more resilient.
Woolsey specializes in a range of alternative energy and security issues; he currently chairs the Strategic Advisory Group of the Washington, D.C. private equity fund, Paladin Capital Group; is a Senior Executive Advisor to the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton; and is Of Counsel to the Washington, D.C. office of the Boston-based law firm, Goodwin Procter. He previously served in the U.S. Government on five different occasions, where he held Presidential appointments in two Republican and two Democratic administrations, most recently (1993-95) as Director of Central Intelligence. From July 2002 to March 2008 Woolsey was a Vice President and officer of Booz Allen Hamilton.
The Future of Energy lecture series is sponsored by the Harvard University Center for the Environment with generous support from Bank of America. All of the lectures are free and open to the public.

Dear Group,
If you haven't heard already, Roberto's talk was postponed until
January. The first Theory Seminar will be presented by Heller Group
Visiting Scholar, Professor Michael Herman of Tulane University, next Monday
24 November from 4-5pm in the Division Room. We hope to have a strong
turn-out for our first joint seminar.
*Accounting for Correlated Many Chain Motions in the Dynamics of Polymers in
the Melt*
*Michael F. Herman*
*Department of Chemistry*
*Tulane University*
*New Orleans, LA 70118*
Abstract:
A theory of melt polymer dynamics that accounts for correlated many chain
motions is developed. It is shown that this theory reproduces the
experimentally observed molecular weight dependence of the diffusion
constant and the viscosity for linear chains and rings. Results for the
relaxation in monodisperse and bidisperse melts are also presented. The
short time, short chain motion of the polymer chains, calculated from force
field molecular dynamics, are used in the theory to predict the long time,
long chain diffusion without adjustable parameters.
Our next seminar will be presented by Dr. Jingzhi Pu of the Karplus Group on
Tue 9 Dec at 4:15pm. An announcement will be sent in early December.
Thank you!
Anna

Hello all,
The internal network interface card of the computer on my desktop in
M110 has stopped working since last Thursday. It showed some problems
from time to time, but it died eventually. RIP.
With several days of investigation, it looks like a hardware problem.
So anyone who has a spare NIC please lend it to me for the test before
buying one. Thanks!
Best,
