Sent on behalf of the Department of Psychology at Bates College
Greetings,
I hope that you’re doing well, and I write to inform you of a faculty search under way at
Bates College for a one-year visiting assistant professor position in clinical or
counseling psychology. If you know of potentially interested candidates who hold a Ph.D.
in one of those areas, or will have earned it by August of 2024, please pass the following
information on to them:
Description
The Bates College Department of Psychology invites applications for a one-year position as
Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology, with a focus on clinical or counseling
psychology. The position begins on August 1, 2024. Anyone on such a trajectory–regardless
of area of focus–is encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will share our
enthusiasm for fostering students’ ability and motivation to engage in scientific inquiry
and to apply the resulting knowledge. The successful candidate will teach five
undergraduate courses during the 2024-2025 academic year, including a 200-level course on
psychopathology, at least one upper-level seminar in the candidate’s area of specialty,
and our introductory Principles of Psychology course. As appropriate, courses may include
a community-engaged component (e.g., field placement), and the staff at our college’s
Harward Center for Community Partnerships stands ready to assist in forging connections
with community partners.
The college’s mission statement celebrates “the transformative power of our differences.”
Accordingly, we believe that campus diversity can contribute to student learning, and we
embrace the college’s aim to extend access to a Bates education to an ever wider range of
students. Candidates who can enhance the diversity of the faculty and/or support an
increasingly diverse student body are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested
in attracting colleagues who share our commitment to supportive teaching and mentoring of
students from a wide range of under-represented backgrounds and marginalized identities.
Qualifications
Candidates must either hold the Ph.D. in clinical or counseling psychology, or be ABD in a
clinical/counseling psychology Ph.D. program and expect to complete the degree
requirements before August of 2024.
Application Instructions
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
Complete applications will include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, unofficial graduate
transcripts, statements on teaching and research, and teaching evaluations (if available).
In their teaching and research materials, we ask candidates to comment on their ability to
promote equity and inclusion in our campus community, especially through support of
students from diverse backgrounds. The search committee will request three letters of
recommendation for applicants who pass initial screening.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
