Psychology Postdoc at the University of Pennsylvania: Using Social Media to Understand
Health and Well-Being
The World Well-Being Project at the University of Pennsylvania seeks a Postdoctoral
Research Fellow to begin in July 2016. The fellow will be based out of the Positive
Psychology Center and be mentored by Professors Martin Seligman and Lyle Ungar.
The fellow will work collaboratively with data scientists (e.g., from computer
science) to investigate large social media datasets (i.e., billions of tweets), providing
insights that further our understanding of health, well-being, and the psychological
states of large populations. The fellow will prepare manuscripts and give presentations in
high-impact psychology and multidisciplinary venues.
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in social science (social psychology,
personality, health psychology, sociology, or public health), quantitative or
computational methods, and writing.

This work is with the World Well-Being Project (see
wwbp.org), a collaboration between
computer scientists and social scientists pioneering techniques for measuring
psychological well-being and physical health based on language in social media. We are
shedding new light on psychosocial processes and developing unobtrusive well-being
measures to supplement (and in part replace) expensive survey methods.
