Our after school program in Newton is in the process of hiring new teachers for the coming
school year, and I am looking to get the word out to local candidates who may be
interested, particularly those with a background in education, child studies, or
psychology. If you would be able to pass this opportunity on to recent graduates/alumni of
your department, or current students with the schedule availability and work experience, I
would greatly appreciate it!
We currently have three open lead teacher positions, which are part time (M-F, 23
hours/week) and involve working with either our kindergarten/1st grade group or our 2nd
grade group. If someone is looking for more hours overall, there is also potential for
working part time in the public elementary school in which we are housed during the
earlier part of the day (I can give candidates info on that when we meet).

Who we are:
The Underwood After School Program is a non-profit after school program serving children
ages 5-12. While we have many areas of core programming such as arts and crafts, sports,
and STEM activities, there is much room for creative freedom in planning, and we love to
let each staff member’s areas of particular interest shine. You will be joining a strong
staff team with a majority of teachers returning for their 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th years

Positions Currently Open:
Lead Teacher for Kindergarten/1st Grade Group
Lead Teacher for 2nd Grade Group (2 positions)
Schedule (23 hours/week):
Monday, Thursday, & Friday: 2:30 – 6:15 PM; Tuesday 10:30 AM – 6:15 PM; Wednesday
2:30-6:30 PM
School year only (August 24th through end of school year in June); includes some days of
February and April vacation weeks.
Responsibilities:
Daily planning, setup, and instruction for a designated group of up to 13 kids per day,
five days a week, in the specified age group. This includes serving snack, supervising and
participating in outside or gym recreation, monitoring homework time, and planning unique,
varied activities for each day. Lead Teachers also work with all children in the program
during combined-group activity times, and with other staff to plan and provide
whole-program events. Must attend all-staff meetings each Tuesday morning and Wednesday
evening (included in the schedule above).
Qualifications needed:
* Must be at least 18 years old.
* One year prior experience with children in a school, after school, camp, or other
educational setting.
* Minimum of a high school diploma; bachelor’s or associate’s degree preferred.
* Must be able to pass both CORI and SORI criminal background checks, as well as a
fingerprint check against a national criminal database.

* Knowledgeable about child development, and able to work with a wide range of child
ages and personalities.
* Energetic and ready to run around with kids!
* Patient and compassionate.
* Interested and skilled in a range of areas, and comfortable leading a variety of
programming.
* Able to manage both small and large groups well.
Competitive hourly compensation starting at $17.00/hour; optional health and dental
insurance enrollment, and 403(b) retirement plan.
