Dear all goodmorning and my best wishes for a happy 2007.
Rhea's message had woke me up concerning my "obligation" coming out from Gennadious meeting on December, on puting together all greek inititatives on providing greek digital content on web or elsewhere.
As a matter of fact I had already done the most of the job a couple of weeks ago but as usually I postponed posting it to the list.
Well now here it is my initial list with all resources I could find. Resources are presented in an excel table with usefull data (url, owner, type, format, access info etc).
As I said above this must be considered only as a first step towards a full inventory of all greek digital initiatives. As it came out of the Genadious meeting we should create a registry for that reason that it would be also usefull to us here in Greece to avoid doing the same job more than once. In that sense my next step consists of the following:
- gather more data about new projects coming out this next period (and there will be a lot as major digitization projects funded by the Information Society Program will be presented). If anyone knows a project I haven't included in the list just name it!
- concerning collections and databases, to gather data about the titles that are digitized and/or indexed (I already have the most of this data, but somehow I have to orginize it... see next point). Anyway I can always just put in an excel table and later on we can import all this data into a nice database system.
- to work on the stuctrure of such a registry: what information do we need to know for every resource and to what level. Any ideas and feedback will be wellcome. Of course this will take some time and a lot of cooperation and understanding between us. We'll see.
I hope all these will be usefull to somebody.
I am waiting for your feedback
Sincerely

Pimp My Bookcart Contest Winners, part I
posted Monday, January 22, 2007 9:55:00 PM PST
This was a bigger deal than we anticipated. We thought our "Pimp my
Book Cart" contest was a funny idea that would spawn a dozen or so
entries. But it seemed to spark something, and we started hearing from
folks all over the country. It even spawned a "Pimp my Book Trolley"
contest Down Under in Australia (we're judging that one too).
Still, by last week we figured all the fuss had been just that, and
that it was still going to be just a few contenders. But then a few
days before the deadline, in a display of procrastination that
impressed Bill, they started pouring in. We ended up getting over 100.
Gene and I scrambled to organize and evaluate them (thanks, iPhoto!).
Several times at ALA we left our booth in the capable hands of our
store manager Jana so that we could look at almost 400 pictures of
book carts that had been pimped up, down, in, and out. Finally this
morning we reached agreement on the winner, several runners-up, and
many honorable mentions. In the next week we'll publish a mostly
complete list of the entries, but we didn't want to delay the big
announcement. And so, without further ado:

THE MGSA GREEK-AMERICAN INITIATIVE
Yiorgos Anagnostou <anagnostu.1(a)osu.edu>
"The MGSA Greek-American Initiative"
The MGSA transnational studies committee announces "The MGSA
Greek-American Initiative," a project whose purpose is to catalogue
information about Greek-American archival material and to compile a
detailed list of resources available in public and academic libraries
on the topics of Greek diaspora and hyphenated Greeks.
To achieve our goal we request that directors of modern Greek
programs in the United States and elsewhere, researchers, librarians,
community activists, staff in museums and preservation societies, as
well as other interested parties share their knowledge of resources
with us.
We envision a database that among other purposes would facilitate
research on Greek America and the Greek diaspora. Therefore we would
welcome not merely web links to resources but, if possible,
narratives and/or lists that identify and describe special
collections, periodicals, newspaper holdings etc. Please think of
the information you provide as a kind of detailed map that will help
researchers most effectively navigate the archive.
The results of this collaborative project will be posted at the MGSA website.
Please forward all information to me at anagnostou.1(a)osu.edu
Thank you in advance.

Subject: Gennadius Library Clean Monday Benefit
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Jane Conlon Goble jgoble(a)ascsa.org (609) 683-0800 ext. 14
January 19, 2007
Benefiting the Gennadius Library…7th Annual Clean Monday Celebration
The Ambassador of Greece to the United States, Alexandros Mallias, and his
wife, Françoise, will join the friends of Athens' Gennadius Library on
February 19 to celebrate Clean Monday, "Kathari Deftera," at Estiatorio
Milos in New York City to mark the end of Carnival and beginning of the
Lenten season. The event features a unique Lenten cuisine prepared under
the direction of Milos' famed Costas Spiliades.
In Greece, Clean Monday is one of the most festive holidays of the year.
Often coinciding with the first hints of spring, the day lures children
and their parents into the countryside to fly kites and to feast on
special Lenten fare prepared without the use of meat, dairy products or
fish (except for fish roe, shellfish, octopus and squid). Cuttlefish
stewed in wine, rice pilaf with mussels, varieties of bean stews and
salads, squid stuffed with spinach and rice, Lenten dolmades and halva,
and the once-a-year appearance of lagana, a yeastless bread, are among the
unique tastes of the day, often accompanied by joyous music and dancing.
Since 2001, the Gennadius Library has brought the celebration of this
traditional Greek holiday to New York City.
The Library is one of Greece's national treasures. Its 113,000 rare books
and bindings, research materials, manuscripts, archives, and works of art
illuminate Hellenism, Greece, and neighboring civilizations from antiquity
to modern times. Opened in 1926, the Library began with the collection of
diplomat and bibliophile, John Gennadius, who presented some 26,000
volumes and archives to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens
to house and to make accessible to the public. Since then, it has added
87,000 volumes, the collection spanning the breadth of post-antique
Hellenic civilization. In fulfillment of the vision of John Gennadius
himself, and with the help of many people in Greece and the United States,
the Library has become "a world center for the study of Greek history,
literature, and art, both ancient, Byzantine, and modern."
Ten years ago the Gennadeion Trustees embarked on the first Campaign for
the Gennadius Library, with the support of distinguished men and women in
Greece and in the United States. This Campaign raised funds to renovate
and expand the historic Main Building; construct a new auditorium; build
endowment; and initiate new programs in preservation, access and outreach.
Now, the Trustees are launching a second Campaign, to raise funds for
critical needs including acquisitions, conservation, digitalization, and
education; and to expand exhibition and study space.
The Clean Monday celebration, will begin at 6:30 with an open buffet
serving traditional Clean Monday foods. Gregory Maninakis and the
Mikrokosmos Ensemble will present music of Hadzidakis, Theodorakis, and
others, for listening and for dancing.
Open-seating tickets are $300 per person and must be reserved and paid for
in advance. In addition, a limited number of reserved tables are
available. Some junior tickets are available at $100. For invitations,
tickets and information, call the U.S. office of the Gennadius Library at
(609) 683-0800 ext. 14. Estiatorio Milos is located at 125 West 55th
Street. The 2007 Zagat Survey lauds Milos' impeccable Greek cooking with
fish just pulled from the sea. Website: www.milos.ca.

There is a book by George Horton "Modern Athens" which desscribes
things c.1900 and which is illustrated with charming period drawings,
including some of Greek Kafenia of the period.
The best sources of illustrations I can suggest are the photographic
archives in Athens such as :

some examples of interesting ephemera and illustrations
<<<The E.L.I.A. collection adds up to a multifaceted coverage of Greece's
historical development through the 19th and 20th centuries.
E.L.I.A.'s merit lies in the fact that it maintains an exceptional
collection of over 800 archives of historical, literary, economic and
artistic content. ............
Moreover, it maintains a rich stock of visual and pictorial material:
photographs, post cards, maps, old advertisements, and a wide range of
various everyday collectibles or ephemera, curios and a mass of other
objects.>>>>

I was wondering if anyone can help with accessing some
of the the following for a project I am working with
others on.
2 photographs: 1 of upper-class Greeks eating a meal
c. 1900-1930 in Greece; and 1 of
peasant Greeks eating a meal, same time period. I want
to have a label that mentions that what you ate was
determined by economics and class and need a way to
illustrate it. I have had no luck tracking down
anything that would fit the bill.
Another missing piece is that I need to find a way to
illustrate the
idea of fasting. I was hoping that some kind of
calendar might exist
that shows when periods of religious fasts are or
perhaps a pamphlet
from the church that advises people on fasts.
Foods associated with specific holidays or events
We would like to create a PowerPoint
presentation that includes images to represent things
like the special foods served at funerals or for
mourning, the specific breads baked for
special holidays, etc. We have a book called something
like "Greek American Traditions
and Custom" that is chock full of this info. What we
don't have are images. In the end, I can scan any
images and put together the PowerPoint but I just
don't have time to figure out where
and how to get them (can these be in any cookbooks?
is there some treasure trove of historic photos?)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Mr. Leich,
My colleagues that deal with Modern Greek Studies told
me that:
Unfortunately there is no English translation of Nikitas Nephakes
poems. He was a local poet of Mane.
There are 6 books about Nephakes, but all are in greek.
Best regards,
Claudine
