New version! More accurate and flexible transliteration engine than ever.
Transliterating Hebrew
Transliteration is the process of moving text from one writing system or
alphabet to another. The purpose of this site is to do that automatically
for Hebrew text.
There are many different alphabets in the world. Many languages, such as
English, German, and Spanish use the Roman alphabet. Hebrew, Yiddish,
Ladino, and some other Jewish languages use the Hebrew alphabet. Russian,
Ukranian, Bulgarian and other related languages use the Cyrillic alphabet.

Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection
Hellenic (formerly Library) Research Fellowship Program 2022-2023
**Contingent on continued on-campus operations during 2022-2023 academic year**
Thanks to generous ongoing funding from the Elios Charitable Foundation, the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Foundation, and the Tarbell Family Foundation, the University Library is pleased to offer the continuation of the Hellenic (formerly Library) Research Fellowship Program (HRFP) for a 10th year. The name change is intended to better convey and reflect the focus of the program. The Program supports the use of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection by fellows for scholarly research in Hellenic studies while in residence in Sacramento, CA.
The HRFP provides a limited number of fellowships (5-8 this year) ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 in the form of reimbursement to help offset transportation and living expenses incurred in connection with the awards. Since the Program’s inception in 2012, twenty-eight fellows in Hellenic studies from 11 countries, including seven independent scholars and 14 women, have benefitted from sustained access to the collection in support of original scholarly research. Thus far these research stays have directly contributed to the fruition of at least 10 conference papers, five journal articles, four book chapters, two completed doctoral dissertations, and one monograph.
The Program is open to external researchers anywhere in the world at the graduate through senior scholar levels (including independent scholars) working in fields encompassed by the Collection's strengths who reside outside a 75-mile radius of Sacramento. The term of fellowships can vary between two weeks and three months, depending on the nature of the research, and for the current cycle will be tenable from September 1, 2022-August 31, 2023. Please note that due to the uncertainty of the pandemic going forward, the HRFP is contingent on continued on-campus operations beginning fall 2022. Should this not be possible due to the pandemic, fellowship offers will be deferred until such time as awardees can opt to accept or decline them.
The fellowship application deadline is May 13, 2022. No late applications will be considered.
Consisting of the holdings of the former Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism, the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection is the premier Hellenic collection in the western United States and one of the largest of its kind in the country, currently numbering approximately 78,000 volumes and over 450 linear feet of archives. It comprises a large circulating book collection, journal holdings, electronic resources, non-print media materials, rare books, archival materials, art and artifacts. With its focus on the Hellenic world, the Collection contains early through contemporary materials across the social sciences and humanities relating to Greece, the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, and the surrounding region, with particular strengths in Byzantine, post-Byzantine, and Modern Greek studies, including the Greek diaspora worldwide. There is a broad representation of over 20 languages in the Collection, with a rich assortment of primary source materials. Dear Friends of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection,
I am pleased to announce that the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection has acquired the Modern Greek Studies Foundation Collection in Memory of Kyriakos Tsakopoulos. This collection consists of some 2,500 volumes of books, journals, magazines, and newspapers; archives/manuscripts and ephemera; oral histories and other audiovisual recordings; and several pieces of art and artifacts. The collection comprises the holdings the former Center for Greek Studies at San Francisco State University (SFSU), established in 1981 by the late Prof. Thanasis Maskaleris, professor of comparative literature and classics at that university. With the closure of the Center in May 2021, the entirety of the Center’s holdings was transferred to the Modern Greek Studies Foundation (MGSF), which in turn donated the collection to Sacramento State for the enhancement of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection.
“We are thrilled that this valuable collection will now be an important part of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection at Sacramento State, where it will be curated by exceptionally knowledgeable and caring professionals with deep respect for the value, beauty, and importance of Modern Greek studies,” said Chris Gus Kanios, President of the MGSF.
The archival material pertains primarily to Greek immigrants and the Greek-American experience in California. Notable among these are the papers of the local Greek-American journalist and author Nikos Rozakos; and photographs, videos, and some music and memorabilia on Bay Area Greek communities, including the files, recordings, and transcripts of about 50 oral histories recorded under the Center’s auspices starting in 2001. Also included are the Center’s administrative files chronicling its activities over 40 years.
Cataloging of the book collection is ongoing, and the archival material is currently being processed and will be physically accessible in the near future. If you would like to contribute funds to help pay for the digitization of select materials from the collection, please visit https://securelb.imodules.com/s/1894/19/home-hero.aspx?sid=1894&gid=2&pgid=…. Under Designations, click View all giving options and select Hellenic Book Fund under University Library; then, under Gift Instructions type MGSF Collection Digitization.
We are extremely grateful and honored that MGSF selected the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection as the new home of this rich collection.
Best,
George I. Paganelis

Dear Friends of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection,
I am pleased to announce that the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection has acquired the papers of Charles Maxton Schermerhorn. The American Charles Maxton Schermerhorn (1901-1985) attended Princeton Theological Seminary in the early 1920s and became a social worker during the 1930s. In 1946 the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) sent him to Greece, but he was shortly thereafter employed by the Near East Foundation in Thessaloniki and by UNICEF, where he was the only civilian (native Greek or foreigner) running humanitarian food distribution campaigns throughout 170 war-torn northern Greek towns and villages between 1946-1951 during and after the Greek Civil War. His interactions included associations with the renowned photographer David Seymour and important journalists such as George Polk, Dana Adams Schmidt, Maynard Owen Williams, and Mark Gayn. Upon returning to the US after 1951 CMS was reportedly blacklisted, thus prevented from employment with the US State Department, and subsequently pursued gainful employment as a social worker in California until his death in 1985.
The CMS Papers, all of which are in English, document five consecutive years of direct field experience from 1946-1951 and contain reports, correspondence, indexed photographs of food distribution sites and people, including children, contemporary military-issued maps, CMS’s diary from 1948, a 200,000-word manuscript CMS wrote about his experiences in Greece and more. Included also are indexes compiled by Schermerhorn's son David. These materials documenting Schermerhorn’s food distribution efforts in the postwar years add another chapter to the history of humanitarian aid in Greece during the 20th century and wonderfully complement other existing strengths in the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection, particularly the Vlavianos papers.
The collection is currently being processed and will be physically accessible in the near future. If you would like to contribute funds to help pay for the digitization of select materials from the collection, please visit https://securelb.imodules.com/s/1894/19/home-hero.aspx?sid=1894&gid=2&pgid=…. Under Designations, click View all giving options and select Hellenic Book Fund under University Library; then, under Gift Instructions type Schermerhorn Papers Digitization.
Many thanks to David Schermerhorn for donating this important collection to the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection, and to Prof. Anthony Bernier and Prof. Gonda Van Steen for helping to facilitate this gift.
Best,
George I. Paganelis
