Two recent publications of early modern Greek literary works in Ukrainian
translation:
1. “Erotokrit”
https://veselka.in.ua/shop/vik/serednogo-shkilnogo-viku/erotokrit/
ISBN 978-966-01-0459-4
163 p.
The book sells for 220 UAH (equivalent to ca. 7,09 euros). Please see the
bottom of this message for info on placing orders.
“Erotokrit”, a Ukrainian translation of Vitsentzos Kornaros’ romance
*Erotokritos
*(from the period of the Cretan Renaissance, ca. AD 1600), is now available
from Veselka Publishers. The book contains the translation by Vasil
Stepanenko and illustrations by Mykola Pshinka.
The translation includes 5,000 verses (i.e. ca. half) of the original text
in the same poetic form as the Cretan original (15-syllable rhyming
couplets); the remaining verses have been included in the form of
intervening narration.
Vasil Stepanenko’s translation was subsequently republished in a second,
expanded edition (also 2016), but that format (containing 6,000 verses) is
intended for distribution (by the Ukrainian government) only to local
libraries, schools and universities. Should new financial support be
forthcoming, the translator would like to prepare a complete translation of
*Erotokritos*.
The translator received the Medal of the Ukrainian State (2017) for his
intellectual activities and his translations.
The translation “Erotokrit” draws on several Greek editions:
For a related interview with the translator in the *Kathimerini* (2016),
see:
http://www.kathimerini.gr/878027/article/proswpa/synentey3eis/vasili-stepan…
The translator thanks Gerasimos-Nikolaos Bougas for the moral and financial
support that he has provided throughout the entire project.
To purchase the Ukrainian translation “Erotokrit”, please address your
request to: Vasil Stepanenko (email: stepanenkovi(a)ukr.net) or to
Gerasimos-Nikolaos Bougas (email: g.n.bougas(a)gmail.com). Requests will be
promptly executed.
*2. Addendum*: Ukrainian translation of *Digenis Akrites* available (2018)
Дигеніс Акрит. Середньогрецький епос
https://www.yakaboo.ua/ua/digenis-akrit-seredn-ogrec-kij-epos.html
ISBN 978-966-569-324-6
Vasil Stepanenko has (also) translated the early modern Greek romance *Digenis
Akrites* (ca. AD 1200) into Ukrainian. A dual-language edition
(Greek-Ukrainian) is forthcoming in 2019.
