I'm sending this out on behalf of my boss who is looking for a Special
Collections Section Editor for the Guide to Reference. Please respond
directly to him at rkieft(a)haverford.edu.
Thanks,

Dear Special Collections librarians, I am the General Editor of the
new edition of ALA's Guide to Reference (last published in 1996 as
Guide to Reference Books and edited by Robert Balay), and I am writing
today to recruit a special collections librarian who can help on an
emergency basis with the compilation of the new edition. See
http://www.guidetoreference.org/ for information about the Guide.
In the first section of the Guide, "General Bibliography," are
subsections for rare books, manuscripts, and printing/publishing (you
will find these on pp. 26-36 of the 11th [1996] edition). The editor
who had agreed to compile these subsections for the new edition cannot
do so, and I am looking for someone who can step in quickly, help us
review and annotate entries already in the database, and choose and
annotate new titles. Another editor has assisted in these subsections
by entering online sources, which means that the major task for a new
editor will be reviewing and deciding to retain/delete print titles
and adding new print titles.
The project is behind schedule and within the week will enter a period
of pilot and "free trial" testing in selected libraries and library
schools. That we are so close to publication places a premium on
getting this work done as soon as possible. Section editors are
typically practicing reference librarians working in or, at the least,
having at their disposal a research-level collection. They have a
capacious, non-format-specific sense of reference sources, a complete
bibliographic knowledge of works relevant to their area of
contribution, and academic as well as working credentials relevant to
their section. Editors also typically have had experience compiling
bibliographies (whether for publication or in-house use) and writing
reviews for publication.
If you are interested in talking about this opportunity, and about
working on the Guide in the future, please write me at the address
below. I very much hope that a member of the special collections
community will be able to find the time in the next month to
contribute their expertise to this century-old publication.
Thanks for your consideration.
