NEH Grant Opportunity - Preservation and Access Research and Development
The Division of Preservation and Access of the National Endowment for
the Humanities will be accepting applications for grants in its Research
and Development program. The newly revised 2011 guidelines, which
include sample proposal narratives, can be found at:
http://neh.gov/grants/guidelines/PARD.html. Please note the new
(earlier) deadline for submission: May 19, 2011.
Grants in this program support projects that address major challenges in
preserving or providing access to humanities collections and resources.
These challenges include the need to find better ways to preserve
materials of critical importance to the nation's cultural heritage-from
fragile artifacts and manuscripts to analog recordings and digital
assets subject to technological obsolescence-and to develop advanced
modes of searching, discovering, and using such materials. Maximum
awards are $350,000 for up to three years.
Eligible activities include:
* the development of technical standards, best practices, and
tools for preserving and creating access to humanities collections;
* the exploration of more effective scientific and technical
methods of preserving humanities collections;
* the development of automated procedures and computational tools
to integrate, analyze, and repurpose humanities data in disparate online
resources; and
* the investigation and testing of new ways of providing digital
access to humanities materials that are not easily digitized using
current methods.
NEH especially encourages applications that address the following
topics:
* Digital Preservation: how to preserve digital humanities
materials, including born-digital materials, for which there is no
analog counterpart;
* Recorded Sound and Moving Image Collections: how to preserve and
increase access to the record of the twentieth century contained in
these formats; and
* Preventive Conservation: how to protect and slow the
deterioration of humanities collections through the use of sustainable
preservation strategies.
Applications addressing one of these three areas of interest are
eligible for a maximum award of $400,000 for up to three years.
The application receipt deadline is May 19, 2011 for projects beginning
January 2012. All applications to NEH must be submitted electronically
through Grants.gov; see guidelines for details.
Prospective applicants seeking further information are encouraged to
contact the Division at 202-606-8570 or preservation(a)neh.gov. Program
staff will read draft proposals submitted six weeks before the deadline
Please note that the Division is also accepting applications for two
other grant categories: "Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller
Institutions" (May 3, 2011 deadline) and "Humanities Collections and
Reference Resources" (July 20, 2011 deadline). Details on these
programs, as well as on the full slate of funding opportunities in
Preservation and Access, can be found at:

Music performed by
Grigoris Maninakis and the Mikrokosmos Ensemble
The Gennadius Library is one of the national treasures of Greece. It is a
world-renowned center for the study of Hellenism from antiquity to the present,
holding some 120,000 rare books, archives, manuscripts and research volumes
illuminating all the periods of Greek history and civilization. It draws a
public from around the world to use its collections and to attend its numerous
lectures and conferences. The Board is comprised of distinguished women and
men from the United States and Greece, and its fine staff consists of the best
of American and Greek academia and librarianship. Visit [1]www.gennadius.gr for
further information on this unique institution.
[2]Please click here to download the invitation.
Here is a sample of some of the dishes you will enjoy!
Octapodi Lathera, slow cooked octopus, potatoes, eggplant, extra virgin olive
oil and oregano. Foods that are cooked “lathera style” are slow cooked under
cover using olive oil and the moisture that is created during the cooking. All
the ingredients are cooked until fork tender. You’ll see a variety of
different dishes done throughout Greece; everything from legumes to seafood.
This is a great dish to eat during the Lenten period as the richness of the
olive oil is quite satisfying.
Garides Sto Fourno, Roasted jumbo prawns, hot pepper & spiced tomato saltsa.
During the period of Lent, when Greeks abstain from meat, poultry, dairy and
any fin fish, you will see a large consumption of crustaceans along with
vegetables and legumes. This dish combines the sweetness of the onion and the
contrast of the spiciness from the spice mixture that is sprinkled on the
prawns. The prawns are then layered over the sweet onions and baked all
together in a casserole. The end result is a luscious head-on prawn with
spices atop the sweet melted onions.
The dinner will be complemented by wines from selected vineyards of
Hatzimichalis Estate in Atalanti Valley in Central Greece (2009 Lefkos blend of
Robola, Malagousia and Sauvignon Blanc and 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon).
RSVP (609) 683-0800 Ext. 14 or jgoble(a)ascsa.org.
Space is limited. Please purchase your tickets early. Guests will receive a
gift bag with a copy of the new edition of The Athenian Agora Site Guide edited
by John McK. Camp II, a gourmet bottle of extra virgin olive oil from Greek
Farm International's Terra Medi collection, a bottle of Estate Hatzimichalis
wine (represented in the U.S. by Athenee Importers), and a copy of Greek
America magazine.

If this is a repeat, please excuse. I
am not the administrator of these fellowships, but am simply trying to get
the word out. Please feel free to forward at will.
The link below may be of interest to scholars outside the New York area --
it gives full information on the short-term research fellowships at NYPL
that are back for a second year. The program is still in formation; we are
hoping, of course, that it will become annual. At present there are twenty
fellowships of $2500 apiece.
http://www.nypl.org/help/about-nypl/fellowships-institutes/short-term-resea…
While last year the funds were linked to specific collections, this year
they are available for work in any collection of any of the research
libraries, including the Stephen A Schwarzman Building (i.e., the building
with the lions), the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the
Library for the Performing Arts, and the Science, Industry, and Business
Library.
Note the fairly short deadline -- April 1st!
Good luck to all.

Item Description
Title: 1883 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARIES OF A GRAND MEDITERRANEAN
TOUR: ITALY, THE LEVANT, GREECE, TURKEY AND EGYPT Publisher:
Author: B.B. LE TALL Publication Date: 1883
Binding/Format: Edition:
Condition: Good
Inventory #: 0001221
On offer are a superb pair of original manuscript travel diaries
handwritten as stated by: "B.B. Le Tall - Day-Book of my tour in Italy
& The Levant. Vol I - Italy. Paris. Athens. Egypt 8.I-9.III 1883" and
"Day-Book of my tour in Italy & The Levant. Vol IV Constantinople and
Homewards 29.iv - 1883." Mr. Le Tall provides a unique diary
experience given his keen eye and obvious love for details. Other
journals provide that Mr. Le Tall is a railway engineer and surveyor
and highly educated and travel wise.
Over 300 pages in the first book [18 x 12 cm] and 70 pages in the
second [19 x 11 cm] give the reader an extraordinary account of his
travels for the year including a very detailed expense report. An
English gentleman, Le Tall starts from his home in Yorkshire then to
Rouen, Paris, Basle, Milano, Venezia, Pisa, Ravenna, Firenze, Roma,
Napoli, Athens, Aohnai, Piraeus, Constantinople, Alexandria and Cairo
and many more.
Collectors and historians will be hard pressed to find more detailed
diaries as Le Tall incredibly provides historical perspective and his
keen observations as an engineer on the affect and wonderment and
concerns of many of the things he observes - a water delivery system
in Naples, the biblioteca of the Abbey in Ravenna, difficulties in
Athens being understood, [he mentions how a few words in Italian is
better than many sentences of French], plants and herbs on Italian
mountainsides [research suggests Le Tall was a botanist too],
Schliemann's Museum +++.
He even has subheadings: State of the Streets, Figs, Market Gate etc.,
as he highlights areas of interest. Rarely have we seen so
comprehensive a travel diary but he writes as he is - a cultured,
learned engineer and surveyor! Ephemera such a tickets, passes, news
clippings are littered throughout the books adding further depth to
this super narrative. Both diaries have some physical trauma but
overall G.
