[In the Land of Books. The Publishing History of Hestia Publishers,
1885-2010]
Introduction: Nasos Vayenas
17x24 cm, 370 pages / ISBN 978-960-99681-6-4
Hestia Publishers & Booksellers is the oldest Greek publishing house
operating without interruption for more than 125 years. Established in
Athens in 1885 by Georgios Kasdonis, publisher of the literary journal of
the same name, Hestia commenced operations at a time when the
printer-publisher of the 19th century began to be replaced by the
bookseller-publisher of the 20th century. Originally specializing in
educational textbooks which provided the business with a strong economic
base, Hestia transformed its operations over time to include high-quality,
Modern Greek literature. The first step to this direction was taken in 1927
when Ioannis Kollaros, Kasdonis' nephew and successor, founded Nea Hestia, a
major literary journal under the direction of Grigorios Xenopoulos. The
moment of crisis for Hestia occurred in 1937, when the dictatorship of
Ioannis Metaxas decided to establish the Organization for Publication of
School Textbooks, thus monopolizing a sector once so profitable for the
company. During Nazi Occupation the publishing house limited its activities
to the utmost but continued to support Nea Hestia, the only literary journal
that remained to be published thereby emerging as a national intellectual
expression of a high symbolic value.
In 1956, at Kollaros' death, his son-in-law, Konstantinos Sarandopoulos,
took over the business. Aware of the pressing need to establish an
editorial identity for Hestia beyond the school textbook sector,
Sarandopoulos had introduced in 1953 the "Neoelliniki Logotechnia" series.
This paperback series, published at a low cost in a small, uniform and
numbered format of 12 x 17, gathered the best writers of the era, namely
nearly all the famed authors of the "1930s generation", including Elias
Venezis, Stratis Myrivilis, M. Karagatsis, Yorgos Theotokas and Angelos
Terzakis. Hestia thus evolved into a brand symbolizing excellence and
intellectual distinction. The study also examines how during the
dictatorship years, under Marina Karaitidi's direction, Sarandopoulos'
daughter, Hestia has been labeled as a centre-right positioned publisher
that stayed aloof from modern trends and political commitments. Today, Eva
Karaitidi, Marina's daughter, represents the fifth generation of the
Kollaros family at the head of the company. The company's production is now
equally divided between literature and social sciences. The actual economic
crisis however has hit hard the book sector in Greece and the future of
traditional, family-owned, medium sized publishing houses, like Hestia, is
uncertain.
The volume includes Tables, Bibliography and Index.

Subject: Institut d'Egypte library burned near Tahrir square clash
For several days there has been an attempted clampdown of the military
forces on the continuing street protests in Cairo. One of the victims
today of the violence that has erupted has been the Institute D'Egypte
and its
library off Qasr al-Aini Street in central Cairo.
The institute is considered the oldest scientific
institute in Egypt it was established
as L'Institute d’Egypte in August 1798 by Napoleon Bonaparte during
the French invasion of Egypt.
Its mission is to advance high quality research
in various fields, ranging from biology and mathematics to fine arts
and archaeology. Its library contains more than 200,000 books,
including the original volumes of the "Description de l'Égypte
(Description of Egypt), begun in 1798 by French scientists in Egypt.
Professor Mahmoud al-Shernoby, the president of the institute, told
state TV in a phone interview that the damage is a “great loss” to
Egypt and that those “who caused this disaster should be punished.”
The fire started on the lower floors of the building, but then spread
to the higher floors. It soon got out of control and by the time
firemen
reached the site, there had already occurred a lot of damage, the state TV
reported that the fire damaged the whole building and all of its
collections. According to eyewitnesses (reported by both MENA and
state TV) protesters were seen throwing a Molotov cocktail at the
institute, aiming at stone-throwing soldiers
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz4ZPHsqj6E&feature=player_embedded#t=106s>
at the Shura Council building, but the projectile missed the intended
target and instead landed in the Egyptian Scientific Institute.

Subject: [EXLIBRIS-L] Fellowship opportunities
Dear colleagues,
I would appreciate your help in spreading the word about these
fellowships that support research in the University at Buffalo
Libraries' special collections. Thank you.
University at Buffalo Libraries Special Collections Fellowships
The UB Humanities Institute, in collaboration with the UB Libraries,
is offering two fellowships for visiting scholars and graduate
students working on their dissertations to use the UB Libraries'
outstanding special collections, which include the Poetry Collection,
University Archives, Rare Books, the Music Library, the Polish
Collection, and the History of Medicine Collection.
Follow this link to find out more about some of the more notable
collections in the UB libraries:
http://humanitiesinstitute.buffalo.edu/fellowshipsresearch/LibraryCollectio…<http://www.humanitiesinstitute.buffalo.edu/fellowshipsresearch/LibraryColle…>
The fellowships provide stipends of up to $4,000 ($5,000 for the James
Joyce Fellowship) to cover the cost of fellows' travel to Buffalo and
accommodation and expenses during the time of their stay. In addition
to the stipend, Fellows will receive library and parking privileges at
UB and are invited to participate in any Humanities Institute events
that occur during the time of their visit. If feasible, Fellows are
invited to give one public lecture on their research. Fellows are also
asked to submit a one page, single-spaced report on the value of
having used the collection at UB that will be posted on the Humanities
Institute website.
The timing and duration of the Fellows' residence in Buffalo are
flexible, though we would anticipate a minimum stay of two weeks. Both
graduate students at an advanced stage of dissertation research and
more senior scholars are invited to apply.
* The James Joyce Fellowship: for scholars and graduate students
whose research is centered on the writings of James Joyce, Modernism,
Joyce-related research, research on Sylvia Beach, Modernist
publishers, Modernist genetic criticism, Joyce's literary circle, his
literary colleagues, or his influences.
* The Charles D. Abbott Library Fellowship: for scholars and
graduate students whose research would be enhanced by any of the
books, manuscripts or unique documents in the UB Libraries special
collections, which include materials from the Poetry Collection,
University Archives, Rare Books, the Polish Collection, the Music
Library, and the History of Medicine Collection.
Please note that applicants may apply for only one fellowship per academic year.
Selection Criteria and Application Procedure
The deadline for applications for the 2012/2013 academic year is
January 13, 2012. Applications must include the following in a single
PDF file or portfolio:
* Cover letter;
* Brief two- to three-page, single-spaced research proposal,
including length and approximate timing of proposed visit;
* Current two- to three-page CV that indicates in detail previous
and upcoming research support (grants, fellowships, leaves, etc.);
* Letter of support from department chair or dissertation director.
Fellows will be selected based on the relevance of UB's special
collections to the proposed project, the value of the project to the
applicant's field, and the qualifications of the applicant as
indicated by research experience and other academic achievements.
Applicants must email all application materials as a single PDF file
or portfolio by Friday, January 13, 2012 to the program administrator
at huminst(a)buffalo.edu.

ICONS OF THE HOLY MONASTERY OF KARAKALLOU MOUNT ATHOS
For the first time in its history Karakallou Monastery of Mount Athos
is revealing its iconographic treasures to the general public.
Karakallou Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries on Holy Mountain,
is celebrating its millennium of uninterrupted coenobitic life with
the publication of this richly illustrated volume devoted to its
portable icons; thereby bringing to light a virtually unknown part of
ancient
Athonite culture and its spiritual heritage.
>From among the hundreds of holy icons in the monastery's possession,
152 were carefully selected for this edition. Historically, they span
from the late 14th to the early 19th century and include masterpieces
that are inaccessible to
most of the monastery's pilgrims.
Quite significantly, the Karakallou
monastery's holdings feature the largest collection of works by
Dionyssios of Fourna, a prominent byzantine iconographer of the 18th
century. Gazing at these stunning photographic reproductions, the
viewer can sense the presence of divine grace that has been absorbed
by these
sacred artifacts through the course of centuries of prayer and
liturgic life. The book's rich visual content combined with an
extensive and well
documented analysis of the artistic and historical background of each
icon provides not only a unique insight into post-Byzantine orthodox
iconography, but also invaluable material for amateur and professional
iconographers alike.
The accompanying text was composed by six Greek and Russian professors
who specialize in Byzantine Art, History and Archaeology. Although the
text is written in Greek, non-Greek speaking
readers can navigate their way through the book by utilizing the
bilingual picture captions (Greek-English) as well as by turning to a
chapter written in English summarising the most important aspects of
the Karakallou icon repository. The edition is privileged to be
blessed by His All Holiness, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who
graciously wrote the foreword.
2011, Linen-bound hardcover with glossy jacket plus protective case
(optional), 552 pages (23x32 cm) showing 241 colour icons (most of
these are full-size icons and with details).
$300.00
